Ive a gold fish,, was the 3rd fish added to my tank

it just stays at the bottom of the tank (not on its side) every now and then it perks up and goes for a swim, the waters all fine as my other 2 (the originals) are dandy.. is it just a lazy fish or is it on its last legs?

I come in the front room each time expecting it to be floating? Do i leave it as is,, or put its out of its misery?

really am torn

You added a new animal to an already established environment. He may be hiding to avoid attack.

like someone just said it might be laying low because of the other 2 fish. How about giving the pet shop aquatics a call to see what they think?

in the night garden

Maybe it's got a bit of a cold?

My friend Mark (who is a ninja) says he once eradicated Bird Flu from the British Isles by putting a drop of Vicks in his bird bath.*

I'm no vet but I wonder if you put a little Vicks in his tank it might work?

Get some blood worm treat see if she comes up to eat it. Do you feed it flakes or sinkable pellets?

Maybe you should remove the fish to its own tank for a little while. If it's ill, your otherwise healthy fish could become ill too xx

As a fish keeper since I was a kid I'd flush the fish(sorry) and get a water sample to local fish shop

Vets are shite at dealing with fish. Unless they are aquatic specialists.

Do you have a local independent aquatic retailer locally? Ring them. Not a Pets at Home, it's pot luck if you get someone that can tell the difference between guppies and goldfish in 1 of those.

Chances are you've either got a weak fish in which case it will die slowly but not harm your other fish. Or, you've over stocked your tank and the other fish are just bigger and stronger socan cope. Or, your water quality is poor but your other fish are used to it.

Oh, and for future reference the quickest and least painful way to kill a (small) fish is to put it in a bag and smash it against a wall. Do not put in the freezer as some suggest.

three of my sons fish died this year one was a parrot fish and the other ones were yellow they were the oldest ones, hes got lots of babies from the yellow ones and a catfish. when they look like they are dying he just leaves them in there then takes them out when they are dead so the other fish don't eat them. I wouldn't flush them down the toilet I think that's very cruel.

Or you could buy something called a priest which you bang them over the head with, he used to use one when he went fishing.

How do you know the fish is not happy? They don't act like humans and their behaviour differs between different fish. Leave it be.

If your fish generally looks unwell. Get a pinch of salt sprinkle salt br sure it falls directly on the fish. I guarantee you this works. I have had all types of fish most of my life I t sounds weird but it does have great results

she might be happy as ive said she does perk up and interacts with the other two fish. They are all the same breed of fish but just every now n then she does her own thing and sits down on the bottom of the tank for 15 mins at a time.. i did suffer amonea problems shortly after adding her but the water quality is good now. She is a white goldfish with no pink or redness to her gils..

she might just be lazy lol

My fish tank is in the attic at my parents house (empty) cause I kept killing them. I'm still known to one of my friends as the fish murderer.

I had fairground fish for nine years. They were ace. Then they died and every one I had after that died in a really short space of time.

Sorry this isn't helping is it?!

How many litres does your tank have?? Adequate filtration? Gold fish are very messy and just 1 more added can destroy your biological balance, gravel or sand, many reasons fish's don't act "normal"

Reply privatelyReply in forumReply +quote

By (user no longer on site)

If the fish is otherwise "normal" No gasping, enlarged belly or obvious growths/fin rot I'd say it's probably being bullied by the others.

Do you have plenty of hiding places/cover for it to hide in?

Is she feeding ok?

You can buy a broad spectrum anti bacterial treatment called Myxazin. It wont harm your healthy fish. If you use carbon in your filter remove it before using the myxazin. I find a 3-5 day course is usually enough to sort out problems.

Good luck

You are actually supposed to put them in the freezer, in a bag of course supposed to be humane?? Hmmm frozen to death?? Guess most flush them
