Gym bashing....

There seems to be a lot of it in the forums these days.

Light hearted or otherwise, it's equally as saddening as being slammed for being out of shape or 'anti gym'.

I work very very hard on my fitness so I find it a little disconcerting that people have such views on it!

I'm not spoiling for an argument but wanted to express my views - not sure if people realise....

I just think it's sad when people make assumptions like, they look fit n toned so they'll be too much hard work or expect too much of me/be outraged by my habits. It's crazy!!

Thank you for your response though

I wish we were more accepting of each others' lifestyles.

I get a lot of stick on here for keeping people locked in my cellar.

Why can't we all just get along?

Gyms aren't for everyone.

Ive never set foot in a gym in my life, the very concept of exercising inside a dull room makes me shiver to be truthful.

However, I'm currently putting in around 150+ miles a week on my bikes, road and off road & over 3000 miles so far this year - that's how i keep fit.

If the gym works for you then its a great place, if not then its a soulless hole. I need the mental stimulation from riding a bike that gym machines simply cannot offer.

Each to their own so long as you are actually getting some exercise & keeping healthy.

Sorry I should have said 'fitness bashing'. I prefer to do my cardio outdoors too!

I know some people despise gyms. I'm quite the opposite though, I get very excited over a new gym .

That's awesome! I love cycling too.

You work hard to stay fit, sexy, confident and healthy. It shows motivation, strength and dedication. Regardless of what anyone says on 't interwebs you're amazing and shouldn't feel disconcerted at all. Most of us try to be the best we can be at any particular moment, whether that's with fitness or just in general, just some are better at it than others. Hold your head high and just be you and keep doing what makes you happy

My head hurts now, think I need a lie down

I need an exercise buddy. I hate the gym too... they smell bad. I'd rather be out on my bike or something but I'm rubbish at that motivation thing. If I had someone to go out with I'd do way more. Ultimate lazy bastard.

Nor me. The only exception is what is quite clearly banter around Shag Tonight's six pack!

Some fitness thread's turn into a bit if a willy waving contest but I wouldn't say that was 'bashing' of people going to tge gym

I can't say I've noticed any gym bashing posts either, but obviously it's not something I would have been looking for.

Keep doing what you're doing and sod what anyone else thinks or says. You obviously enjoy it and feel good. Anyone who'd make a negative judgement on you based on something you enjoy but they don't isn't someone you'd want to meet anyway.

I don't go to the gym to get fit, I go because I enjoy it. Music on, sweat on and a little eye candy is all good for the soul.

I've chatted to couples whose photos have been super fit and to be honest, I've been a little daunted about meeting them. But then, that's my issue, not theres.

I wouldn't say I've seen specific 'bashing'

There's polarising opinions on people that keep fit in a gym over people that weigh lift on the sofa with a pint and a bag of pork scratchings.

I (mr) have experienced both ends of the spectrum.........I was huge and had my own gravitational field at one time for which I was ridiculed, whispered about etc.

Now I use a gym twice a day for 4 or 5 days a week, 5 stone shifted and I now get the 'why do you bother with that gym nonsense?' Criticisms.

The simplest solution is to just say to oneself 'fuck you and your opinions, they're yours but I don't care about them and don't value them'

What I was getting at was comments like:

I wouldn't meet a fit, toned person because. ...

Or they would expect too much of me...

Or I won't meet people who have previously met 'slim' people etc etc.

We are people too...

Haha being funny obviously.

Oh well I've probably made comments like I'd feel intimidated meeting someone who was obviously very into fitness, or whose previous verifications were all small petite women. But that's entirely based on my own body hangups and shouldn't be interpreted as 'gym bashing' in any way, and I'd apologise if it had been.

Yup on joining the site it specifically says don't use your real name, so artificialname was following instructions.. while my forum posts are mostly bollox, you should try sitting round a fire with me when the beer is flowing we reach an entirely new level of bollox over the course of an hour or so, some would make surealist painters give up and paint villiage scenes

MAMOBA, miles and miles of bugger all (Aberdeenshire)

If you enjoy it, and like working out, then enjoy it.

If it puts some people off meeting you, they likely aren't your type of people, so its no real loss...

For me the gym is my sanity space. Time to focus on movement, rather than work/family/child/other half/detritus of a week. I exercise about 5 - 8 hours a week minimum (more when I can) and over the last 4 years have lost 17 stone, and gone from a 24/26 with a 48GG bra, down to a 10/12, 32DD - I am much fitter and healthier now, and enjoy life more. I'm in the process of training to be a personal trainer, as I figure if I can do it, anyone can!

That's them bashing themselves, not you!

They're not saying they wouldn't meet you because of how you are but because they'd feel out of place or like they weren't worthy of your interest.

And incidentally, a lot of people do say they won't meet fat people, and how lazy and greedy we are. Often.

I haven't trained properly for months, only really able to muster up the energy for a little maintenance each week, and can only blame this on my own lack of energy, motivation and laziness recently.

I still have a strong respect for the gym and those who are willing to train hard and look after themselves.

See my point?"

The difference between the two is that there is a stigma attached to being fat and calling someone fat can be seen as derogatory. People don't necessarily attach the same stigma to the term skinny (although I think it can be meant in an equally derogatory manner depending on the intentions of the person calling someone skinny). If I said I wouldn't meet someone because they're a bag of bones I would expect to be torn apart by the forums for being nasty towards a body type. But slim and curvy seem to be terms that are accepted.

I've seen people saying they won't meet someone who is toned and fit because they don't understand what they would see in them (which may be down to their own body confidence issues) or because they associate being fit and toned with other attributes (e.g. vanity, self obsessed) or past bad experience with someone who was fit and toned. This is just the opposite end of the spectrum to your example of saying you wouldn't meet me because I'm fat which may be because you associate being fat with laziness, lack of hygiene or previous bad experience.

Personally, I think there are loads of people with self confidence issues and don't understand why someone who takes good care of themselves would want to meet them.

Up to August i was motivated, hungry for racking up the miles & beating my mates on the climbs. I went on holiday to Cornwall last week & just 'stopped' as i realised i was overdoing it.

This week the weather is horrible & ive no motivation to get out in the wind - its dangerous.

*Mind you, took the big MTB to Cornwall & rode Cardinham Woods mtb trails, those road miles must have paid off because i could beat enough people up the 20% inclines on my 35lb bike

I aint a gym gerbil. I leave my sweat and pain outside. I am lucky enough to walk straight out into the wilderness tho. I understand if ya live in a big town or city, then the gym provides the lot. But ya cant get off the bike 50 mile from home if it rains or you run out of steam. God bless the penines.

"Not posts - comments within posts.

What I was getting at was comments like:

I wouldn't meet a fit, toned person because. ...

Or they would expect too much of me...

Or I won't meet people who have previously met 'slim' people etc etc.

We are people too...

Haha being funny obviously.

I'd say that was 'expressing a preference' rather than bashing people

Would it be viewed as a preference if stated 'I wouldn't meet you as you're fat'.

Which of course is a preference but I'd bet my best shoes that the postee would be jumped on from a great height.

See my point?"

I can see what your saying, but I don't think its qui're the same, I wouldn't meet a buff gym man that has only met slim women as it would make me feel rubbish that I was falling very short of his usual standards, that wouldn't make for a pleasant meet for either of us xx

No I don't see your point. Not meeting someone because of their weight is a preference.

The terminology of that example is noticeably different to your other examples though.

Not everyone will find you attractive. Not everyone wants someone with an amazing body. Focus on those who's preferences include rather than exclude you - it makes Fab far more rewarding

How true! Bonking 20 miles from home with the prospect of Oxenhope Moor between you and home tends to focus the mind somewhat!

See my point?

"Gyms aren't for everyone.

Each to their own so long as you are actually getting some exercise & keeping healthy."

However resistance training outside of a gym with proper equipment can be very dangerous. So for that there is little other choice.

I do miss climbing though, don't miss the hours of walking up mountains to get to places to climb though

Maybe not so much in the forums, but there are LOADS of profiles which specifically say they're not interested in anyone who is big, overweight, BBW, or refer to keeping themselves fit and trim and only want to meet people who do the same. Read a charming one this morning that said not interested if you're "a fatty bum bum".

And of course that's their personal preference too, but just goes to show that yes, it does work both ways!

I wasn't focusing on it as 'aimed at me' I was merely stating that the comments are becoming more frequent.

I'm not talking about myself or statements toward myself.

I was trying to make a point that fit/toned people get quite a lot of stick on here for being just that.

Clearly people are finding it difficult to grasp what I'm saying or I'm not making myself very clear.

I find it as hurtful as an unfit person to be judged on my appearance. Perhaps that helps. Again - speaking in general terms.

Aaaw but this is what I mean, it doesn't mean that because they've met a particular type that they aren't interested in another. .

I would hate to be responsible for making someone feel that way and I think many feel the same way.

I do get what you're saying though xx

I think they get what you mean, but let's face it, you've got a pretty face and a gorgeous body why do you care what the good the bad and the ugly of fab think?? Most of the 'haters' would do a very quick turn around if you actually propositioned them!! You could have whoever you wanted to!!

It's Luke when you turn someone down and they say 'didn't want to meet you anyway' it's just a preemptive version if you like xx

"There seems to be a lot of it in the forums these days.

"

Why let it bother you? On any given day you'll come across anti everything from: singles, single men, bi, marrieds, professionals, benefit scroungers, fatties as curvy, bbc, gym bunnies...you'll go mad if you let it taken on other people's negativity.

Pretty pointless getting upset by nonentities.

I just think it's sad when people make assumptions like, they look fit n toned so they'll be too much hard work or expect too much of me/be outraged by my habits. It's crazy!!

Thank you for your response though "

Well I have to work my arse off to stay in shape, to look okish and feel healthy, I honestly would never be any different now!

Speaking as someone who was extremely over weight in my younger days, I have the upmost respect for anyone who dedicates time to making themselves happier and healthier in body and in mind!

These people who are "fitness bashing" are just lazy , unmotivated and jealous individuals who secretly wish they had the mind set and dedication to look and feel good , but no they would rather sit on their fat arses blaming everything else as to why they are overweight!

Let them carry on with the horrendous lifestyles of no exercise, burgers and alcohol it will only end in one way for them!!

Remember "obcession" is just a word the unhealthy use for us as an excuse for them being lazy bastards!!

Obcession isn't a word at all..... And we're not all lazy!!! Quite the opposite in some cases!! I work 16 hours 7 days a week and have done for the past 6 months. Where in that time can I fit in going to the gym??

Don't tar all fatties with the same brush thank you very much.

Um because I have a house and animals to look after in that 8 hours off.... Oh yeah and sleep I also need to sleep. And no some of us DON'T have the choice not to work all the hours God sends. And before you start waffling about excuses and lack of motivation.... Really?

I've seen plenty of childish retorts about "steroids" from people here that directed to users who have a good body.

It just goes to show that a good body does not make for an attractive personality.

An ugly personality in a good body still makes an ugly person.

I've done marathons, tough mudder, triathlons but due to not training for six months my body has decided to go back to its natural state of chubby. So again don't judge until you know the whole story. Op this is why people don't like gym buffs.... He's a shining example xxx

how am I a "shining example" I passed my opinion is which im sure is the whole reason behind a forum?!?!

and of course you choose to work 16 hours! you choose to do everything you do in life, no one makes you do it, just like I choose not to sit on my arse and let my boddy go into a "chubby" state as you put it!

anyway im not arguing with you as I have just said, you make your choices in life just like I do!

Because the way you put your opinion across is nasty!! And yes of course I choose to work!! Or in your opinion should I go bankrupt so I can go to the gym more??

well if you are having to work 16 hour days you have made some terrible decisions in life!!

I've had some bad luck so I'm getting on with it! Why is that something to be ashamed about??

you make your own luck!!"

Bullshit.

To an extent you make your own luck but some things are beyond control.

That is just smug tripe from someone doing better than someone else and congratulating themself on it.

i can empathise with the i don't have the time thing, i work 12 hours a day on a 7 day rolling router, i don't drive so an hour at the gym is 2.5 hours of my time by the time I've walked there and back, so i bought a tread mill and i now go out jogging with the dogs instead of walking, i do community nursing and as i said i don't drive so i cycle round my calls

it don't have to be about using a gym you can fit exercise into your home and everyday life.....if you want to

Quite. Don't say anything but grovelling praise for the fit ones, whilst they can be as vile as they like about anyone they perceive to be less perfect than they.

no one is saying we are perfect, but as expected you lot stick together, just like the OP stated, "

As stated, this is why many people are wary of the gymheads. How can anyone relax and have fun when they suspect they're being assessed and found wanting continually.

There's no need for nastiness EITHER WAY.

I was just passing my opinions on this, its funny though isnt it that all the happy posts on here are from the healthy people, and the fatties are posting depressing miserable replies

Well how would you feel if I was being nasty to you? Oh that's right you don't care what I think because I'm less of a person because I made a mess of my life and I'm fat. Cheers. Again another Example OP, I would question the real confidence of someone that has to put others down to make themselves feel better........ Just saying "

OP, I think there may be one or two stereotypical fitness fanatic attributes being demonstrated on your thread which may explain why some are anxious about meeting people that appear to be physically fitter than themselves.

"Obsession isn't a word at all..... And we're not all lazy!!! Quite the opposite in some cases!! I work 16 hours 7 days a week and have done for the past 6 months. Where in that time can I fit in going to the gym??

Don't tar all fatties with the same brush thank you very much.

just another excuse, I hear them all the time, if you are working 16 hours im guessing thats your choice! and whats sticking another extra hour on a day to lose some fat!!

Um because I have a house and animals to look after in that 8 hours off.... Oh yeah and sleep I also need to sleep. And no some of us DON'T have the choice not to work all the hours God sends. And before you start waffling about excuses and lack of motivation....

Why is that something to be ashamed about??

you make your own luck!!

It's funny the one moaning about negative posts is actually the first one that made any.

Still, some people have to belittle others to make themselves feel better and can't cope with anything more than poking at the easy targets.

Just a bit!

A certain poster is doing a great job of demonstrating exactly why it is!

O o O oo

To the OP....I can't ever remember people bashing others for using the gym but I stand corrected if you mail me a link....but it is often that the "fatties" get insulted all the time.

Now as this has turned into one of those threads again, maybe time to shut this
