folkestone

I looking through some books in a book shop and came across a book called Crap towns which lists the top 100 crap towns nominated by people in britain. If you had to nominate a crap town what would it be and why?

near the sounds of the wimborne quarter jack!

Not a huge fan of Swindon. I`ve had to frive to the railway station a couple of times and never found my way there without getting lost, including the second time when I had a Sat-Nav! Ended going down a "buses only" street.

Hatfield. The town centre itself is bizarre. It all faces inwards so you could drive past it without noticing there are a handful of (mostly crap) shops there.

Telford! My ex moved to Telford when she left me. We got together again and I visited her a few times in Telford. What a horrible souless place. It has no centre, just roundabouts with an icelands in the middle. She lived in a place called Donnington, two things to do on a Friday night; bargain booze or suicide. Plenty have chosen the later, it's that much of a shit hole

i always joked about that the best things about romford (where i use to hang oot in my younger days) were the railway station and the A12... but cant do that anymore since my sister is moving back to the "peoples republic"

Daventry. No train station, no cinema, no hospital other than a consultation place with no A and E or maternity unit. Only 1 supermarket. Smallest town centre in the history of town centres with a vast majority of new shops opening being charity shops. Shit schools so bad offsted are threatening to close them. Low wages no matter where you work yet some of the highest petrol prices in the country so high our MP has had to take a petition to shell demanding they get the prices reduced. No LPG pump at any of the petrol stations, there is only 3 in town anyway! None of them are supermarket petrol stations so we dont benefit from any of the special offers/deals.

I think thats enough to give it a high place on the list

Oh and for those who dont know it we aint talking about a village here its a BIG industrial town!!

I went to Uni in Northampton and really liked the place. However, I come from Mansfield and anything is an improvement after that. I know people who look at the news and see places being hit by disasters and wonder if they could get a week half board there, just because it is better than here.

Mansfield was buit on 3 industries, Pits (now shut bar 1 that is shutting), factories (90% shut) and a brewery (demolished). The town has tried to diversify into feral youths and casual violence, but whilst these are certainly big growth industries, the profit margins appear low.

Its difficult for me as I naturally compare everywhere I go to York. OK, most towns won't need a Peter Rabbit shop, or a Fudge Kitchen, etc. But Birkenhead really doesn't have anything nice there. Apart from the metro station out of it.

Errrm! Have you actually been to Hull?

Or are you just jumping on the bandwagon of those who take the piss out of the city but haven't actually been there?

Are you aware of the regeneration going on in the city right now? Are you aware of the massive injection of private and public sector investment? Are you aware of the 1000's of jobs coming to the city over the few years?

Yes, it has its own shitty areas but it is no worse than parts of Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, London, Bristol or elsewhere.

I have worked all over the UK; I settled in Hull years ago and though I work down south as that was where the work was 3 years ago, I would really like to move back there as the city is "on the up"!

At least it got City of Culture 2017. Has you area done so??

Lol, I used to work in Mansfield and I agree with you all the way.

I actually think they missed a trick though, when they demolished half the town centre to build the Four Seasons shopping centre, they should have just kept going and knocked the whole place down.

"Went to Northampton town centre once. I left promptly

Lol I used to work at the ann summers in Northampton lol

I went to Uni in Northampton and really liked the place. However, I come from Mansfield and anything is an improvement after that. I know people who look at the news and see places being hit by disasters and wonder if they could get a week half board there, just because it is better than here.

Mansfield was buit on 3 industries, Pits (now shut bar 1 that is shutting), factories (90% shut) and a brewery (demolished). The town has tried to diversify into feral youths and casual violence, but whilst these are certainly big growth industries, the profit margins appear low. "

i love Mansfield, i get so home sick when i go visit family, it will always be home to me no matter where i live, it maybe a shit hole but its my shit hole

"has to be Bradford for me,and Hull

Has you area done so??"

Yes I see your point I can see whare you are comming from...

A few of the places it's been our misfortune to visit and we are not in a hurry to repeat the awful experience are Reading ( truly awful) , Pembroke Dock (utterly depressing) and Liverpool (awful place that is neglecting it's past and is shoving architectural monstrosities all over the place hiding what people want to see.

Portsmouth and Basingstoke are as bad, destroying what gave them their identities and replacing them with glass, steel and expensive shops.

Bahhhh!!!!

I think to answer this question right, you have to define A Town" in this context.. because, some of the places mentioned so far doesn't seem to fall into same category//e.g if I say.. keigly is shit but Luton is alrite.. not in same category is it? or Chelsea and Darlington.
