So, not only are they not sacking him, they've signed him up for another 3yrs.

Wonder what's in the small print?

Clause 1 'make sure people keep tuning in' simples.

Love him or loathe him, Top Gear is one of the BBC's most popular shows.

Top Gear is sold to virtually every country in the world and brings in millions for the BBC, a good proportion of that is down to him.

"Clause 1 'make sure people keep tuning in' simples.

It's the biggest earner worldwide for the BBC.

Broadcast in about 170 countries with 350m people watching per week.

Like him or hate him - the show wouldn't be the same without him. They'll make far more money by paying him that than losing him.

If Top Gear was dying on it's arse there's no doubt in my mind that he would have been sacked as employers always look for a quick, easy way out.

After all, he can't say he didn't say the words he used as they were broadcast for us all to hear.

The bloke's bulletproof

But top gear isn't a consumer car show any more , it's more like bottom with cars .

Tbh I cant stand the man so what I do is not watch it , that way I cant moan about it .

One quick question on recent incidents about him ; did anyone know the word ' slope ' was an insulting word ?

Let's face it, nobody would watch a consumer car show on the telly. You can glean all the info you need on a car from t'internet.

Truth is that the Top Gear franchise is built on Clarkson and would fail without him so he gets to dictate his terms and the BBC have no choice but to pay if they want to continue making money out of him.

If he was fired, what would it achieve? The people that don't like him would be happy, but if you don't like him (to the point where you will go out of your way to formally complain to the regulators) do you watch Top Gear? No, he has more fans than enemies, that's for sure!

It was used by the Americans (mainly) to describe people of Asian descent.

Agree with him or not, like him or not. You cant beat someone who says what they think and he's one've the last bastions of that on tv.

The sooner the pc brigade, sensationalists and emotional junkies do one and give up looking for something to take offence from 24-7 the better.

You would hear it in many of the Vietnam War movies, but it wasn't something that really caught on, at least not here.

The Top Gear show is syndicated to so many countries it probably makes financial sense for overseas sales.

What? Never heard of slopes or slopeheads as derogatory terms for SE Asians? Totally racist!

But ghosts and spooks are perfectly OK names for programs because they are only derogatory names for whites!

I'm sure I'd heard the terms from american soldiers in films..as it is a derogatory term about those with narrower eyes(commonly far eastern asians)

I didnt find it funny..and I knew exactly what he meant by it...if anyone else didnt, I think it shows some naivety or a willingness just to let someone mock a person/race.

I dont like Clarkson, just in general..not a top gear fan either..though granted he makes much of the shows attraction.

next time your out maybe try making a slope joke towards an far eastern person..I'm sure theyd just laugh it off.....

I Think not! In fact Clarkson makes a point of reminding everyone that he is a Yorkshire man every time he can (Doncaster if my memory serves ).

Spook is a derogatory word for black people.

The TV show I belief is about MI-5 and they are referred to as spooks in the spy fraternity.

The only TV show I know that contain the word ghost or ghosts are about ghosts. So I have no idea what you are on about.

I had heard the term slope before. It's been in many films and it's a terrible word.

it sounds fair enough, I'm not 100% pc loving myself.

Though I see it like this:

kid comes home from school, being taunted about their race..because its more acceptable to point out the differences in other races as a derogatory term?

its a message I wouldnt like to be broadcasting on tv.

Somebody said it isn't a consumer show. Correct, the previous incarnation of was and got canned for low viewing figures. The whole crew jumped ship and eloped to channel 5 where the show became fifth gear. It was carp when it was canned, it is still crap now.

Clarkson and Andy Wilman came up with the current format which has been a worldwide success

the woman who reported it, was on twitter receiving all manners of abuse. It wasnt the committee that told us it was a horrid term...many of us knew it was in the first place.I watched and thought...

jeremy..you are a prick

richard hammond tried to save the silence by pointing out it was about the mountain.

it shouldnt have been aired...thats really the point.

"

Which is why they both get so well paid- they own the format to Top Gear, the Beeb own the name Top Gear so it's a reciprocal licensing agreement where Clarkson and Wilman get a good chunk of the profits from the Beeb's licensing agreements with other broadcasters and other 3rd party revenue streams.

He could call the Queen and old cunt and probably survive as it would cost a fortune to get rid of him, even with breach of contract such as the above- either way he's laughing as he's raking in the money and will continue to do so until any contract agreement expires.

He's definitely a cock, but he's a clever, funny and influential cock

The point I was trying to make was that in my 20+ years of bar work ( at least 4 night a week ) , I have never heard that word used as an insult , in conversation or in a ' joke ' , until it was widely publicised in the press since which I've heard it 3 times , in fact only one person has said they knew it was an insult before said incident , ( and he was smug twat who always claims to have known everything before anyone ( you know the kind of person I mean ))

I've seen him both on TV and live and he goes out of his way not to offend anyone. I don't think it is affected just for telly, but comes natural to him.
