Strange gifts

Sheffield

I got an unsolicited gift last night whilst in the pub with some forumites and whilst it was very thoughtful it was a little odd.

A complete stranger gave me a bowl of cheese.

It was tasty cheese and we (the forumites and I) shared and enjoyed it, but it was certainly the strangest gift I've received in a long time.

In some pubs they put cheese and buscuits on the bar and tables because the salt makes you thisty and want to drink more

Back in the days when I went to the pub on a sunday you could always garantee some salyed nuts, cheese and even rost potatoes in sume pubs at lunch time to try and keep you in the pub drinking till closing time then about 3pm

MAMOBA, miles and miles of bugger all (Aberdeenshire)

From having worked in many pubs, yes the salted nuts are to make you drink more... but many of them actually contain urine and fecal matter... Personally I've always stayed away as I have some issues with people not washing hands and then touching - and yes I am one of those weirdos who carry hand gel in my handbag and use it quite frequently.

"Was it wrapped when he gave it to you? "

It was in a bowl.

It was one of the bar snacks available and whilst I was ordering the homemade pork scratchings and a bowl of olives for us to share I had a bizarre conversation with him where he recommended the cheese saying he'd eaten four bowls already that night.

It was a good twenty minutes later when he suddenly said "the cheese is really good" and plonked a bowl full on the table and walked away.

I've never eaten nuts on bars for that exact reason. And I always carry hand gel with me. I only started doing it after I had children, but I use it all the time whether they are with me or not.

I prefer dry roasted or the honey ones.

When I worked in a pub we got round the mucky hands by serving little blocks of cheese and having cocktail sticks out and having nuts in little shot glasses that people could take to their tables
