Some fucking bastard has hacked my laptop. They think I'm stupid enough to cough up the £100 "fine" to have it unblocked.

How the hell do these things get through the anti virus ?

Its more likely something you have downloaded. Disconnect from the internet and go from there.

If its the one I suspect it is Mbam (Malwarebytes) may be your best option.

It's a screen that pops up and activates your cam as well stating your computer has accessed an illegal site and has been blocked and I need to pay a fine of £100

It's got some very good logos from the met and local police on it and surprise surprise I need to pay by trans cash

Macs are open to vulnerabilities but are targeted less as fewer people buy them, so less to exploit. Malwarebytes is your friend against exploits like these. See if you can download it and run at startup from a drive - I am no expert but use it and have read their info. Free programme and updates.

a system restore will also rid you of the virus ...but if thats not possible you need to isolate it in your startup files and remove it , it will show up in your sys log , delete it and the problem will be sorted do not pay these arseholes .. there are several ways to disable this trojan , and none of them require any kind of payment .

Start in safe mode and you should be able to download Malware bytes. I'm sure that was what I did when I had it.. Good luck.

It sound like 'Cryptlocker' to me and if it is, restoring or running a virus checker won't get you files unlocked.

There is a website where you can get the key from though.

What's funny is the apple os tends to have known security flaws left for incredibly long amounts of time partly because apple do not like to have patches saying "hey we fixed this problem" because it affects the user's confidence. (Ignorant of the risk is better for marketing)

Windows having a much bigger market gets a lot more attacks but equally fixes flaws very very quickly.

But now days with apple gaining market share there's more interest in attacking it and apple users so far have proved very vulnerable because they're so used to their "security in obscurity" they don't take the basic measure most pc users do.

Malware bytes will deal with the ops problem though.

Doesn't matter how you "caught" it, you did, you now have choices, check out the unlock site that has been in the news for the last week, or re-install your original software, or do a roll back to before you had the problem.....good luck

I've had macs for years. Never had a problem and there are frequent updates to fix problems.

Start the computer in safe mode.

Open msconfig and disable it from starting.

Check your programs list for any new programs that you don't recognise and remove them, then run your antivirus and anti-malware programs.

I've had this happen to me twice - everytime I restarted my laptop, it wouldn't go any further than displaying the 'screen' telling me that I had accessed an illegal website. The only way I got rid of it was to insert the recovery disk into the hardrive to reformat it.

Spybot search and destroy

Malewarebytes

All free all do a great job. Download and install, update regularly and scan at least monthly.

The fact you have never had a problem doesn't change the facts.

And there's a pretty graph you can Google for that shows the discovered flaws and fixed flaws for mac, windows and the main Linux builds. Apple lags very far behind on patching flaws.

You'll never know there's a problem from these flaws as they don't affect performance merely allow people to run code without permissions.

As always though the biggest risk to any computer system is the user. especially at home where there's no admin to block your install rights

Ive has this happen two or three times. I did a three key reset and closed the browser and nothing was locked at all just a stupid pop up that locked the browser and nothing else. I dont know if its because I use google chrome, or my firewall/virus checker but it sure as hell didnt touch my pc

Totally agree. Far to often people make the mistake of thinking Macs are more secure. And I see the argument of "I've never got anything like that on a Mac" far to often. I've only ever had 1 virus on a PC and that was done on purpose (was wiping the machine anyway and wanted to see what it would do). Does that mean PC's are safe? No it means that I'm an IT professional and know the inherent pitfalls of the web and I'm careful about what I do and especially what I download.
