Hello, I'm looking for some advice and hope that any IT geeks out there can assist please.

I want to buy my 9 year old a laptop or pc and printer for Christmas. My budget will be around £400. Any suggestions?

To be used for doing his homework, gaming, music etc. Also advice would be appreciated on parental control and virus software.

I am a complete technophobe so please reply in simple terms.

Thank you so much x

Homework and music can be done on a fairly average machine- gaming machines tend to be more powerful depending on how complex the games are. so although you probably won't be letting him play stuff like Grand Theft Auto- it is processor and graphics heavy....have a look at the recommended machine specs on some of his regular games.

For virus protection, visit www.avast.com. Download the free version (you need an email to register it but they don't spam you or sell it)- i've used it for almost 10 years and been virus free

thats where my specific knowledge falls short as i've been an Apple user for almost 5 years and i don't play games, so i have no idea on whats currently a decent PC spec.

If he has any games, you should find a panel on the box saying 'recommended PC specification' or similar, and some of the following

Intel® Pentium® Processor G3220T (this is the processor or the brain)

Windows 8.1 (this is the machines operating system or the language it talks to other software and machince parts with)

Hard drive: 1 TB (this is the storage space, where all the programmes and music/pictures go- 750gb should be a minimum really)

Memory: 4 GB (this is a temporary memory- 4GB is OK, 8GB will be much better for games)

With built-in WiFi (to connect to the internet without a cable, as long as you have a wireless router from Virgin/Sky/BT etc)

You should also see something about a graphics card.

Although they're not the best people, its worth popping into PC World for an initial chat and get an idea of what you might need- then see if you can find a local independent computer shop and see what they can custom build for you too- get it all written down and come back here and see what the computer geeks make of it all
