Click on start, Then run then type in msconfig..you will get a list "Startup" untick the items you dont want to auto start

run msconfig (from the run bar in the start menu, or cmd.exe)

There will be a startup tab in msconfig where you can untick things you don't want to start.

Alternatively if it's just Skype, there's an option in the Skype settings that says, "Start when windows starts" which you can untick.

No worries. It causes me all sorts of problems too; I never use it any more. Who needs it when you have KiK and Whatsapp though? :P

You know XP no longer gets Windows updates unless you apply the Embedded registry key (and then it's only a subset)? Officially it's end of life.

Plus new versions of Java may not install on it.

I only mention it in case you recently updated Skype and it's now causing problems

I'd also advise removing & re-installing Skype (if it is actually the problem).

I've many other tips for running things smoother, but shan't assume from one paragraph how I might help

As above except IF you can't get into Windows to do that due to it crashing on start up...

Then you need to run it in Safe Mode, hold F8 as Windows starts sometimes you may have to reboot the PC a few times and press F8 at various times in the boot process, but if caught right you will see a text menu offering you various options, select Safe Mode from that menu and then run the MS Config and disable Skype in the startup options

Once that is done, start windows normally and manually run Skype after it is running properly, and use the Skype options to disable on Windows Startup

See it that works...

No just tried loading the new one hoping it might work - but alas, same problem as the last version. I've got a little hotmail add on skype that just about works for chat. I use whatsapp mostly, but would like a desktop chat app, I like having my proper keyboard!!

Thanks guys - I didn't need safemode thankfully as it loaded once and froze without crashing windows, so I uninstalled the main program. Nothing in startup now either. I need a new computer really, this one is well old now.

I won't use it also for the reason that Microsoft now own it, oh and I won't use Google mail either lol

Actually Windows XP is less vulnerable to "all sorts of shite", as the number of users decreases the interest of attackers decreases, plus it's been around long enough for security holes to be well plugged...

but every update MS does shows the weakness in XP and there are a hell of a lot of people who still run it, lots of my friend still use and I always tell them I will not try to fix the problems on their machines because it is "shite"

"I will not try to fix the problems on their machines because it is "shite""

That the OS is shite I don't dispute... but it will soon be one of the safest OS's out there (never as safe as CPM or DOS) but safer than Windows 7, or Windows 8, or OSX, or Linux, or Android etc...

ok, out of interest, why would XP, a defunct OS without security updates - but are available for other Win versions ( which highlight problems in previous versions ) - be more secure than later versions?

Simple, the security updates are plugging holes in the new software, the holes exist because the software has new code which has holes in it, the old software doesn't have the same holes. and many if not all of those that did exist when it was released have been fixed

Central

Whilst you are using xp, just continue with your antivirus and also consider adding malwarebytes which scans your pc for all kinds of nasty stuff- it is free and worth updating every few days. A firewall could be useful too. All of these will help keep your usage safer whilst microsoft have stopped updating it.

ok my understanding was that any patches revealed the flaws inherent in XP

Doesn't work like that, think more along the lines of the Toyota recall for faulty brakes and it's lack of implications for older models of Toyota cars. Add to that the decreasing number of XP users which reduces the impact they can have by finding holes in the system.

I don't have these issues with having to dance to Microsoft's tune

I tried a few flavours of Linux and settled on Ubuntu as i tjink there is better support on line and in the press (magazines) for this OS it comes with a full office package and continuing support

If you just want a computer to work then give Linuz a go you might be surprised

Ok got a message on startup saying I had changed the system and 'The system configuration utlility is currently in diagnostic or selective startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time windows starts..."

Do I just disable the message or have I done something wrong?? I unchecked Kies and Spotify webhelper while I was there, but there was no skype checked as my uninstall had worked.

I thank you clever people..........

Go to the programs themselves, find the options (sometimes called preferences or something similar) and un-tick the start with windows option. (N.B. everyone should do this unless you really want the program to start with windows)

taking it out through MSConfig is a diagnostic method which results in the message you are getting, the proper way is through the software.

Once you have done that the ticked entry in Startup on MSConfig should disappear, as the software should have removed itself from the startup configuration.
