There's been an excellent Radio 4 programme. 5 minutes a day from the assassination to the outbreak of war .

Yeah I understand why some people ask this, but it's more of a commemorative moment of the very fact that it was a hundred years ago to the day, that we got involved in the Great War.

Sad sad situation. Too many men died for nothing during trench warfare etc.

Over the top into spraying machine gun fire.

Tragic

there is a beautiful display started, 90,000 ceramic poppies that should be finished by November 11th.

I saw glimpse of it on the news this morning but missed where.

It looked beautiful, truly beautiful

The men and women who died, did so in order that we could live free lives. They didn't die in vain and we shouldn't forget them.

We wouldn't even be able to swing had we been defeated!

I for one am very thankful to every one of them for the free life I'm able to lead

Einstein was once asked what weapons would be used in World War Three. He hazarded a guess by saying that World War Four would be fought with sticks and rocks.

I am hoping that in 2018 we can finally put World War 1 to bed and stop talking about it.

Everyone from that war is now dead. How long do we keep looking backwards?.

I don't see the battle of Hastings being commemorated.

In my opinion World War 1 was one of the most obscene moments in the history of mankind along with the holocaust of World War 2.

Any freedoms that the citizens of this country have nothing to do with why WW1 was fought. As I've said before, I have the greatest respect for those have have fallen in battle for their country, but WW1 was not about the welfare of the British public.

Regardless of political _iews we all should take a minute to reflect as this war affected every family in Britain and many more across the world.

According to the CNN article....

The moving tribute to Britain's military casualties is due to be completed by November 11, 2014 -- the day that commemorates the anniversary of the 1918 cease-fire on the conflict's Western Front and those who perished.

I'm not sure about using the Poppy - its significance is the end of the War.

I like the idea of switching the lights off at 10pm and lighting a candle.

Islington has marked the death of each soldier from the borough with a sign close to where they lived.

Seeing Shirley Williams talking about her mother always moves me. I read Testament of Youth by her mother, Vera Brittain when I was 18 and was so moved by it and the role women played in the war.

Missed all this with being stuck in hospital with no tv, radio or newspapers. Hardly been online. Gutted. Think I'll do the candle as soon as I get home.

Lest we forget

"Not quite sure why we are celebrating the beginning of the war rather than the end? I wondered what all the poppies were about...... "

I didn't think it was a celebration as such more remembrance of people who have their life for their country. I wouldn't debate the rights or wrongs of the big picture but in the field the fount line troops were defending their homelands in their minds on both sides. Its a matter of remembering and not forgetting so its not repeated. I have just spent the weekend in France and it was more a somber mood and one of thanks there.

I think its important to highlight the Great war, as grim as it was. Not really celebrating, and there has been a certain amount of input from Germans.

Reading up on the Internet It mentions

887/888,000 british and commonwealth Troops died in the great war but in total

Up to 9 million died we have our freedom

Because of them we can only thank them for

What they did and will always do so Hopefully by remembering them Its the

Least we can do for them.

What she said. Let's celebrate the end of one of the worst decisions this country ever made and the incredible sacrifice by those who suffered as a result.

Surely we must debate the rights and the wrongs? How else do we learn?

The fallen & the maimed wouldn't have crossed my mind yesterday or today, but they would have on November 11, as they do every year....

I am pleased that the 'call out' to spare a thought triggered me to watch the news reels, observe the 'candle' reflection hour, but most of all, I will make the journey to see the 'ceramic poppies'.

Plus, you can buy them and the money is split between four charities.

They are doing a sunset mass too where you can let them know the name of the person you know about who died.

It would have been a worse decision to allow Germany to conquer Europe.

"I am hoping that in 2018 we can finally put World War 1 to bed and stop talking about it.

Everyone from that war is now dead. How long do we keep looking backwards?.

I don't see the battle of Hastings being commemorated.

In my opinion World War 1 was one of the most obscene moments in the history of mankind along with the holocaust of World War 2.You miss the point totally. "

People who choose to ignore history, are doomed to repeat it.
