I did try Tor but found it slow. And like most things, advice from someone who can vouch for a product is often better than trying whatever a search brings up. Tor doesnt store cookies, so is a bit of a pain to use too.

Something like 'PRivate Internet Access' is highly rated and has received good reviews on Lifehacker and Torrentfreak.

Look for one which offers their service across the platforms you need it on = so your phone (android/iOS), laptop, tablets etc as well as your home network (if you have one).

If you want to protect your whole home network, I highly recommend a dedicated VPN router - typically these are sold by the VPN companies or you can brew your own using a Linux based firmware called DD-WRT and one of the off-the-shelf compatible routers available at places like Dabs or Ebuyer.

Using a dedicated router means all your traffic goes via VPN from your home network. If you get a VPN service which allows you to pick your exit point, you can appear as if you're in the USA, Sweden, Caymen Islands etc - which is useful if you want to use some of the streaming services in the US (Hulu for instance).

I read a report (think it was on Engadget) that even using TOR flags you up on the US Intelligence systems for tracking.

There are some advantages to TOR, but there have been recent reports that the NSA can reverse some of the TOR encryption using exploit code.

To be fair, if what you're doing in the Dark Web is getting the attention of the NSA, i think you have bigger issues than 'which VPN to use'!!

My point was that just using TOR brought you to the attention of the NSA, so there's little point using it. Mind you I just don't do anything illegal on the internet anyway so it would be boring for them. I don't even download torrents any more, and even when I did it was only to watch US TV shows before they aired here.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Interesting thread, thank you.

I was reading the Ipsos Mori Global Trends Survey report this week about data:

73% of those who say they are willing to pay extra to keep their details private haven't even changed the security settings on their browser;

33% claim to usually read website terms and conditions but server side data says that this is only 1%;

Knowing more doesn't increase trust and can increase concern.

It seems people are generally ok about snooping for "security" reasons as long as it's not them being snooped.

My use of the internet is boring adult stuff, and some relates to sex, all of which is legal. Im just less comfortable about isp's etc knowing everything I do and vpns have interested me for a long time. I certainly dont need the hassle of denied flight access etc though, just due to normal adult use.
