Old buildings are hard to protect due to way they are built and materials used....it's said as it was a lovely pier

I spent last week in Eastbourne and had a really nice holiday including a stroll on the pier. It's very sad.

Closer than you think

"That's not being saved.

Always said in should've had a sprinkler system.

Given the number of piers that have gone up over the years, I'm amazed the owners' insurance didn't insist on sprinklers. I'm sure they'll say it was Listed, but that doesn't stop them making essential changes where justified.

Being listed wouldn't stop a sprinkler system being installed.

I've designed them.

near the sounds of the wimborne quarter jack!

Fromlooking at it earlier, the fire was being confined to the first stage. Hopefully it can be contained.

They're damping down now and will be all night by the look of it. It seems to have been contained let's hope the structure is sound.

"Damn shame in this day and age they can't protect such iconic buildings."

Every building can be protected, just a case of spending what's required..

before Windsor castle went up the 'Royal estates' didn't consider it necessary to take note of what Royal Berks fire and rescue strongly suggested..

and we know what happened there..

Poor old pier, been here since the year dot. Let's just hope the damage can be put right - we can't have Eastbourne without a pier! I remember the last fire, up the other end of the pier, way back in the 70s, that's the 1970s not 1870s, thank-you. Certainly does seem to be an occupational hazard with piers catching fire.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

It looks very sad but they are saying it might still be structurally sound enough to repair.

I was a bit of a shock waking up in Brighton, turning on the television bleary eyed and seeing a pier on fire - I was convinced it was the pier across the road until my mind started working properly.

I feel the need to make a complete confession.

It has been weighing heavy on my mind since I heard about the fire.

I attempted to take The Only Minxie Minx onto Eastbourne pier on Sunday night.

We did not set foot on the pier itself as they saw us coming and slammed the gates shut.

However...

It was- the obscenely wealthy royal family got a nice chunk of tax payers money to fix it.

CamBorne have found £2m to restore the pier.

See, the money is always there for what suits them and the election timetable.

I hope the work goes swiftly and the pier us returned to use.

Since it was insured I wonder what the money's for. A fund has been set up for the people who worked there.

so they said as soon as they put fire out.atleast it were only part of the pier x hastings and Brighton lost the whole thing and just shell left.think Eastbourne will get sorted as fire contained to just lose the arcades and some shops

It doesn't help my case to admit I was at King's Cross Station a few hours before that went up either does it ...

And so it should. I hope it makes people see that a lot of the decisions on what is restricted and cut is ideological and nothing more. When money is needed for something that suits an agenda it is found without any problem at all.
