Was just wondering how many people used it and what they thought of it. We have looked a lot at it recently as booking holidays. I tend to go by the overall score a place achieves rather than individual re_iews,as peoples opinions of what constitutes good service, food etc varies greatly. As long as the overall score is good i am happy.

Use it all the time and leave honest re_iews I find it good especially if somewhere is a bit dodgy if the hotel does not refute it steer clear

I browse with caution. And often bemusement at the tiny, nitpicking things people rant about.

For example, the last hotel i stayed in, from what people were saying you wouldn't touch it with a barge pole . Yet it turned out to be superb, even better than my expectations upon selecting it. Already booked for a return trip.

Most of what people ranted about simple wasn't in evidence.

I use the ice skating system of scoring. I ignore the best revue (probably written by the hotel)

And the worst (probably written by the hotel next door)

I ignore the moans about no tea making facilities in med hotels which never provide these and the gripes about no nightlife in resorts described as quiet and vice versa.

At the very least, some of the reports are very entertaining.

This is why i take a lot of what is said on it with a pinch of salt, i swear some people go to a 3 star hotel and expect 5 star service

Sheffield

I use it but discount places with just a few re_iews (possibly by staff) and make sure I read to see what people are raving/ranting about - some people love being near the nightlife, others hate the noise for example.

There's a restaurant in Sheffield which has some very poor scores but when you read the re_iews it's because the portions are enormous and people are complaining about waste. Which means it's a restaurant to go to with a big appetite!

Good plan.

I used to rely on it but we went to a hotel in Yorkshire with good re_iews and it was dire. I will always look on trip advisor but wary now

It's obvious from some re_iews that some are miffed that the people they met in the lift paid a lot less so they nit pick.

There are a few restaurants in Sheffield that are looking at getting together to sue trip advisor because it is used by other businesses to leave fake re_iews.

You need to remember one point in reading any re_iew

If people have a gripe they write about it.

If it's fantastic they don't

Also one mans meat is another's poison

Ask yourself do you think the re_iew is balanced.

Don't think we have answered the question but hope it helps xx

Always use Trip Advisor, as has been said, take really good and really bad re_iews with a pinch of salt, also bear in mind, is what you are getting in line with the price you pay? Do not expect 5 star service for a 2 star price.

Re_iews are also useful regarding hotel surroundings.

I read the re_iews with a pinch of salt too. Some people just plainly don't like fun and make a career out of complaining. One person's 'gentle 5 minute stroll to an idyllic beach' is 'the sea is effin miles away!'

Surely you don't mean that some verifications are not strictly true?

I am shocked.

I do look up the hotel and read the re_iews but it doesn't really cloud my own judgement. I know what I like and expect from a hotel so ill research the area, look at the rating system etc.

Hate the site ..but biased as in the trade

Some ppl are honest but most only write terrible re_iews cos they don't get there own way or money back ... I do find ppl quite easily complain but not as easily praise !!

We had one who thought our place was terrible cos we didn't show pre match football and his kid was jumping on sofas and pouring all over the fire ... Crazzzzzyyy people !!!

And we r supposed to smile and like it !!!

I do read the re_iews, but with caution. It's been known that competitors who have never stayed, have left bad re_iews and people who work for the hotel, have left wonderful re_iews.

I was working in Iceland and Reykjavik when a delightful young man from the lonely planet walked into a bar

Unless he got freebies all the way his re_iews were scathing

Bearing in mind he was on a very generous allowance system, a perfect job, I found his actions disgraceful and I phoned his boss with my findings

As a "host" you try your best. We go out if our way to make their holiday brilliant! But when you ask for a re_iew it doesn't happen! The fact we give a welcome pack which includes wine, water, beer, tea, coffee, filter coffee, sugar, milk, beach towels & tourist tax - nothing! So very disappointing!

No not at all, but when people promise a re_iew then they should stick to their promise. A little appreciation would be nice!

I use it but I do also read the re_iews to get a rough idea as to why people have given these scores, ect.

We found a lovely little gem in Turkey a few years ago with awful ratings, yet when you read the re_iews it was people moaning about chips not being on the menu and not being able to get bacon for breakfast (- You're visiting a Muslim country, you dick!)

or it being quiet when it clearly states that it is a secluded spot up in the mountains.

Some people are just nit-pickers so it helps to do your research. x

Yes I use it went to Egypt last year and it helped us choose a nice hotel and saved us money telling us where to get our visas and not get ripped off by the holiday company.

You still have to sift out the stupid re_iews.

Working in the Hotel Industry as I do, and have done so for many years, the _iew in the business is that sites like Trip Advisor have become a dratted nuisance.

Yes, the original concept was admirable, but as with all good ideas, the processes become hijacked by less than generous people, who have suddenly become "experts" at how a hotel should be run and if it came down to them trying to run one, wouldn't actually have a ruddy clue.

We have, at our hotel, differing re_iews by various guests and my Deputy GM will actually take on disparaging re_iewers at their own game. More often than not, re_iews are written by someone who has a grumble, but wishes to blow it out of all proportion yet, oddly, doesn't put over the other side of events, only theirs; we call their bluff!

Best case scenario was the hotel in Callander in Scotland in May which got a scathing re_iew from a pissed off Guest. Unfortunately for the person that posted the re_iew, the Hotel Owner decided to launch a blistering retort online and highlighted how the aggrieved guest had actually smashed walls, terrorised every other guest with his d*unken rages, and caused such a furore, that the Police had to be called and he was arrested. Add to that, the guest had furnished false address details, and his credit card bounced, such that the hotelier was out of pocket by nearly £500.

The Hotel earned positive feedback from other guests and actually, his occupancy levels soared; the aggrieved guest had to lie low.

Trip Advisor works if users treat it, their re_iews and so on with elements of respect, courtesy and so on; there are others, unfortunately, who really vent their spleen over the smallest or most insignificant detail and that is where the site falls down.

Everyone who visits has to pay a daily tax (13& over) this would be a charge levied when you check out - we absorb it - currently 1.05€ pp

We only leave positive re_iews on the whole. We have left 1 negative re_iew- all the other re_iews were positive but this place was a total dive I don't understand how they can have do many positive re_iews. The sheets on the bed were filfy. We left out of pocket as we had paid in advance

Would be our worst nightmare - we steam clean every time to make sure it's perfect. New pillows every year, decorate every year as the saying goes " you don't get a 2nd chance to create a first impression"!
