Robotic Cars

Titz Towers, North Notts

I see the government is legislating for robotic computer controlled cars to be legal on the highway to some degree.

Driverless carriages sound like a rum proposition to me. For one thing, how do you know it's the genuine article and not someone pissing about, just ducked down? I'd love to drive crouched down, using the force to make sure I don't hit anything obviously, and to then pop up at traffic lights just to make the people in the next lane jump. Car thieves would find it a bonus, as they could evade CCTV. Short people would also be fine, as you'd never know if it were Popeye or Lickety driving or if it is just a driverless car.

How safe are they? You've not got a human controlling events. There is no boy racer, with lightning fast reflexes, or some veteran geriatric with 60 years experience of causing carnage in command. Will anyone even notice any difference? If the roads around Mansfield are anything to go by, frankly, it may even be a bonus. I can't imagine two of these cars sat at the lights, revving their engines next to each other before wheel spinning off.

Mind you, if you do get run over by one, who gets the blame? Is it your fault for stepping out in front? The chap who programmed the route, regardless of the fact there is a host of new build housing there and one of these cars is now stuck on someone's back garden? Or how about the car itself? Can a computer get insurance and if so, will the age of the computer work for or against it? Will a 21 year old robot car have lower premiums? If so, I want my old Spectrum to control mine, as the premiums will cost hardly anything, but if it is anything like playing Gauntlet, it will crash just as I think I'm getting somewhere. Mind you, if I do get one myself, the first thing I'm doing is sending it through the McDonald's drive through, as it should be interesting to see their faces.

I know a lot of people will be worried about the safety of these driverless carriages, so my solution is to have a guy walk in front of them, with a red flag to warn people. Now I know this will slow traffic up, so if he were to sit in the car and have the flag on the bonnet they can travel faster and be less of a nuisance. In order to keep space for goods and passengers, perhaps the best seat for him would be in the driver's seat.....

That'll be funny.... self driving boy racer cars which can't break the speed limit.. I wonder if they'll control the sound levels too

It would be interesting though expensive if it comes in and I wouldn't want to pay the extra cost.

Judging by my experience cycling home on the A9 last night, I think it should be an improvement.

As long as they don't have a button labelled "Engage ignorant cunt mode". Which is called manual mode nowadays.

I'd love a robotic car - I'd put a mattress in the back and give the instruction - "wake me when we get there".

At a guess I'd say that legally the driver will still be in charge of the vehicle in case of accidents. Rather like a pilot flying under autopilot, you'll still have to have ultimate control.

Having been listening to the Daily Mail show on Radio2 it seems some people are under the impression you'll be able to drive one if Blind, or reading a paper or d*unk.

Yes, yes, but can I use an old Spectrum and claim lower insurance premiums?

Our local chip shop is pretty spangly, but I wouldn't go that far with complimenting them

It's for exactly those reasons why I don't like the idea - stupid people owning them!

I also don't trust GPS systems to be accurate to the levels they claim to be. On a recent trip that I logged using a GPS system connected to my car it showed that I drove through several fields and somehow flew over a motorway bridge! Now, imagine that when combined with either a d*unk or an idiot at the controls.

You also need to consider that cars are already very complex and the slightest sensor glitch can cause all manner of tedious and expensive problems and when you start adding things like servos and laser/radar avoidence systems into the mix it'll get even worse. Not to mention the added weight will kill the fuel economy.

If you can build one yourself, does that make it a KITT car?

Horsham

Both the yanks & orientals are working on this idea, of course the oriental car is light years beyond most of the others. Thiers has 360 radar to keep a look out for other vehicles, plus it can read basic road signs so knows the speed limits.

We already have loads of gadgets in ours to make them safer, but people still crash using them.

Anyone next to Tina looks flat chested. LoL

I'd be a little concerned whether it had detected my motorcycle approaching as it waits to pull out of a junction, can't beat a bit of good old fashioned eye contact

Don't be so bloody silly. Those things were always crashing so it's bound to push premiums up. Aside from the fact you don't get tape decks in cars anymore so you could never load your route. And even if you could it'd take 10mins and give you a headache.
