Perhaps try asking them to be quieter? Communication is a wonderful thing. Passive aggressive gestures don't tell them what you want.

Call the police and report them. Should not be making loud public noise after 11pm, disturbing the peace. I'm sure a knock at their door from a uniformed police officer telling them to keep it down and giving them a warning then they will get the hint, lol.

Yes. Just point out they are keeping you awake and could they reduce the noise after 11pm.

I called the police on my sisters neighbours once, 2am, music blaring, shouting, dog barking and woke my nephew up twice, rang the police, turned the music off, went to sleep and had the woman having a go at me the next morning! Lets see how she likes it when she wants to sleep!

Cannot believe people are suggesting calling the police. It's the next door neighbours, knock on the door! Or ask them from out of the window if that's easier.

Give them the benefit of communication before calling the riot squad in, why not!?

It's festival time for some.

I hope none of you calling the police ever make any noise after 11pm. Make sure you never have a screamer visit.

Why not call the police? Its an offence to make loud public noise after 11pm, so well within rights to call the police and report them for disturbing the peace.

I generally dont worry if I come across as flustered, angry etc, but do like to speak up. Neighbours should have respect for others who need to rest. Past midnight if they dont respond I would contact authorities.

I should have had most of my street arrested this weekend then. All those people chatting outside after their barbecue parties.

If you ask and it continues. If it goes on beyond midnight then I think the noise patrol could be used but as a first resort? I want my police doing more useful things.

If i've ever had a party that i know will go on past 11pm then i have always called round the neighbours and told them in advance. For neighbours to do this without giving any notice to next door is bang out of order. As i said in a previous comment, shows they are inconsiderate of others so if it was me i would'nt hesitate to call the police and report them for it.

Go on Google, English to Polish translation and type the following into it ;

Print the search result and take it round to show them. Should keep em quiet for quite a while.

I don't know what the law is saying no loud music after 11pm (cos surely pubs n clubs wouldn't be excluded from law)...noise nuisance is an issue for environmental health at the local council n they can put measures in place etc which can ultimately lead to eviction (if council/housing association) or controls imposed to the landlord if private!

The only thing the police can do is advise them of their anti social behaviour!

Just my two penneth worth!

All of the Polish I have come across, some my neighbours, would apologise and move inside if I spoke to them. Jeez, my Polish neighbour even changed his smoking location when I said it was drifting into my living room!

I live in a poor inner city area - communication works.

Knock on the door and try to speak to them first, only leave them a note if you don't get any answer. It may take a bit more nerve, but it's by far the most likely way of getting them to consider your feelings.

People tend to pay more attention to people they have communicated with. You may even get to know them.

Its not obviously a last resort, that maybe true for yourself but you can't speak for others. For some people calling the police would be the 1st port of call. If the neighbours had been drinking then thay are unlikely to listen to reason from a neighbour, more likely to listen to a uniformed police officer at the front door. Could maybe make an exception if it was a weekend but on a weeknight when people have to get up for work the next day its really not on.

No...it's definitely odd. You might not realise it, but if your first instinct is to call the police when you have any minor disagreement with your neighbours, it is very, very odd.

If the neighbours had been drinking then thay are unlikely to listen to reason from a neighbour, more likely to listen to a uniformed police officer at the front door. Could maybe make an exception if it was a weekend but on a weeknight when people have to get up for work the next day its really not on."

Why make an exception at the weekend? People work at the weekend too. If you have a stance then be consistent with it.

Silent sex after 11pm too don't forget.

I always tell neighbours in advance of any late parties i have to avoid any ill feeling. If neighbours don't give any notice then quite frankly they deserve to be reported.

"Cannot believe people are suggesting calling the police. It's the next door neighbours, knock on the door! Or ask them from out of the window if that's easier.

Give them the benefit of communication before calling the riot squad in, why not!?

Why not call the police? Its an offence to make loud public noise after 11pm, so well within rights to call the police and report them for disturbing the peace.

Because calling the police would, quite obviously, be your last resort, not the first thing you do if you have an issue over noise with your neighbour, no matter what the law might be.

What an odd attitude you have.

Its not obviously a last resort, that maybe true for yourself but you can't speak for others. For some people calling the police would be the 1st port of call. No...it's definitely odd. You might not realise it, but if your first instinct is to call the police when you have any minor disagreement with your neighbours, it is very, very odd."

No, its only odd in your opinion. A number of people have posted here and said call the police, so i am not alone in my opinion.

Sometimes you have an impromptu late evening. Not a planned party just people chatting and getting on with each other and not noticing the time slip away. Those memorable evenings that leave a happy feeling.

Sure, but these are new people, so it's a new situation. And because they don't speak English to each other doesn't necessarily mean they can't speak English with you, so you may as well try to get a friendly relationship started.

Alternatively, you could take Centaur's advice, set up some sort of security camera to monitor their every move and hope to involve the authorities in all of your lives as soon as you can. Peace and love for all!

People just don't realise how much further sound travels in summer. I live in a detached house with a largish garden, my neighbours have similar homes.

Problems occur when the weather gets warm an they have a barbecue at 7 in the evening inviting friends who bring large amounts of booze, the party goes on usually until 2am. Everybody has been drinking so conversations are loud enough to be heard 50 feet away, any sensibilities and restraint has long since disappeared. And foul language and music is heard all a cross the estate.the only people who can stop it is the police, banging on doors only gets 10 minutes quiet before it goes back to full volume.

Yes as the OP said this is the 2nd night in a row, and disturbing the peace and causing noise nuisance after 11pm is against the law people are well within their rights to report this kind of thing to the authorities.

When they are doing this 2 nights in a row its just proves how inconsiderate they are of other neighbours, and generally inconsiderate people like that don't take any notice when you have a quiet neighbourly word in their ear.

All the stuff I hear about it not being like the old days and no sense of community etc. can all be solved by talking to each other. There will be the odd person/family that don't respond but most people are better face to face than sending hostile notes or the police.

Just think how you would like to be treated if you had been naïvely breaching the peace?

You are making the assumption that they were doing this naively? For all you know they could be well aware they are not meant to be making loud noise after 11pm but just don't give a stuff about neighbours. Its been reported in the news that certain sections of the Roma community like to stay up late, drinking in the street and making a lot of noise. They are aware that this is an offence here in the uk but they just don't care or have any consideration for their neighbours or respect for the law either.

Think you'll find that staying up late, drinking in the street and making a lot of noise while not caring or having consideration for their neighbours is not the sole preserve of sections of the Roma community in the UK.

You may not have seen it reported in the news, but members of all sections of UK society have been known to exhibit those traits.

"All the stuff I hear about it not being like the old days and no sense of community etc. can all be solved by talking to each other.

I moved into a house when 8 months pregnant. I awoke at about 2am to realise I was singing to music played loud in my neighbours house.

The ex suggested I go knock on the door to complain as he wouldn't hit a pregnant lady!

Basically the noise carried on for months wellafter 11pm. I ccalled police and council. We had sound equipment in our lounge to record them one weekend.

The outcome was unless they were doing it for over 60 mins every night they couldn't do bugger all about it.

I did suggest they gave me the council officers home address and I would see how I could disturb them in the early hours for less than 60 mins every night to see if they still felt that was fair.

The moral of the story was it never got resolved and we moved eventually. I also got divorced from a man with no backbone!

1) So you have read a newspaper article that presented evidence that members of the Roma community stay up more, drink more in the street and make more noise than anyone else in the UK?

2) Yes, many journalists are indeed being paid for writing fantasy stories. Most stories designed to appeal to the prejudices of a paper's readers are embellishments of the truth, to put it mildly.

He didn't want to go knock on the neighbours door at 2am encase he hit him. His reasoning was that thr bloke wouldn't hit a 8 month pregnant lady with glasses lol. I had to always deal with stuff like that as he always had a reason why he shouldn't do it.

After years of me doing all the stuff I eventually realised he was spineless and there would always be an excuse.

Try talking to them directly first. Hopefully this will sort it and you need to get used to new neighbours . It can take a few weeks. If it doesn't settle, keep a diary of the noise nuisance.

Can't believe some of the comments on here. My worst ever neighbours to date were in my first ever house. They were British & bloody awful for months until they got evicted!

Lots of Polish I have met - clean the communal areas in flats, are grateful to have a home and aren't as the media seems to have a habit of portraying ! I take people as I find , not how I am told to perceive them by the media.

Really? There has been a discussion countering points made by others from both the pro and against police contingent.

Conversation is good - it's how we get to know and learn about each other. Agreeing with everything presented tells us only one thing. Maybe two, on here, if the OP is female and the support is largely male.

If you can't face seeing your neighbours then put a note through the door at least. At this stage you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

It should be the only option you need to take, but what happens if your polite request gets ignored?

Heard the "host" say to his guests on more than one occasion as the door was being closed "its that c**t from next door complaining about the noise "F**k him, its my house and I'll do what I want in it, he doesn't own the street".

so when the police do get called you are the one whose they know has complained and come in for all the aggro.

One ex neighbour actually took his own kids to their grandparents because he knew they wouldn't be able to sleep with the noise his party would make, so he knew how much it would disrupt other children's sleep with his racket but as his own kids were well away from it he didn't care about anyone else's

Just go and talk to them. They probably haven't a clue they are bothering you.

Smile, be friendly, just ask them to keep it down late at night because they kept you awake."

I agree. You dont have to worry they dont understand you. Its stereotype, most not British ppl dont speak in English.

Your smile can much more help than letters or direct call to police ( its also regulation at the moment, police can ask you for call to your emergency council line, and council after taken your report will send you via post a form to fill in).

Few years ago I had a similar situation.. after 3 times I called to police.. 2am with 8months child who was awake.. Now I have enemy behind the fence

To them screaming swear names at them seems to be the way, very charming.

Not necessarily...there is a helpful website about dealing with nuisance neighbours and point 1 is communication it's already been suggested writing a letter stating facts regarding their noise.....tit for tat is not the answer...I deal with the aftermath of neighbour disputes on a daily basis and see how it can escalate into mayhem...it's usually solved in mediation where they are able to communicate with each other

I suppose it depends on how late it is, and how noisy you are. Especially now when its hot and people have their windows open at bedtime. Also if your neighbours get up early for work or have children. All these things matter.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

"I asked them to quieten the music as my daughter couldn't sleep and they did immedietly . It was a case of sign language as they didn't understand me . However they talk so loudly in the garden and I think they smoking out there . The land lord told me it was a family well it is a big family if it is as there is at least two couples and two kids living there away for a week from tomorrow will have to have a think .

"

If they responded to turning the music down immediately then be specific with them about how loud they are being when they speak. They gave you a good and immediate response on the music front.

Why didn't you just ask in the first place? People aren't mind readers, you know.

That said, the last time (when I was with my ex), I went round to ask a neighbour to turn the music down, I ended up staying on and getting rather d*unk.....oops.

Ring up language line or the big word, they'll translate for you.

To be fair, they did turn the music down.....and then filled me full of whiskey.

There was a distinct lack of sympathy in the morning, as I recall.

Those cruel people, holding you hostage and making you drink.

We ended up with the neighbours coming over and joining us one evening when we ran out of vodka for the cocktails. We just asked over the fence if they had any and they came over and joined in.

Or try sign language for speaking. Or give them a note they can read and translate.

Re: calling the police before you have even spoken to the people in question...

I was about to make some comment poking fun at you townfolk for taking that stance, but Lickety is in that London, thus making it ridiculous....
