Listened to a radio programme where female circumcision is being stamped on in the uk ?

A guy came on and asked the question that if its being made illegal for it to be carried out on girls then why not boys ?

I know that religion will rear its ugly head but surely it must be down to the person who it's being done on not forced on when they are a baby ?

I know deep topic and don't know if its the right place to air it but it just hit a common sense nerve ?

Docking of dogs tails is frowned upon by some but circumcision ?

On a woman it's mutilation not circumcision. Done by non medical people. Anyone who tries to justify it needs their head read.

Circumcision and FGM are two completely different procedures. I totally agree FGM should be made illegal.

Should be illegal in every country. I saw a program on it a few years ago and it looks pretty barbaric and totally unnecessary to me

i totally agree but I'm not clued up on the whole thing it just really made me think ?

Which is not a bad thing if it could only have the effect on more

Sometimes (male) circumcision is necessary for medical reasons, but other than for that reason, I don't agree with it.

F.G.M is never necessary, offers NO medical benefits what-so-ever and is performed purely with the intention of stopping females from enjoying sex, usually by a person with no medical training and without anaesthetic.

So although I don't agree with either, I certainly couldn't put them in the same drawer. I know F.G.M is already illegal here but in an ideal world it wouldn't be practiced ANYWHERE. x

Well I've had my eyes opened and lots of great comments so if at least I've increased my understanding of the horrible things being forced upon some women then I have grown in knowledge

but its only done to children, full grown women don't go and choose to have this done, its something that's done to you as a child, its mutilation of the female body and holds no benefit at all to the girls, in my opinion its barbaric and need to be stopped

FGM is a barbaric act, it is an assault upon some children less that a year old and has no place in any modern society..

noone has said its ok to do boy for none medical reasons, cutting off bits of children by none qualified people is as bad be it a boy or a girl

i think a lot get more passionate over girls being done because of the reasons why they do it to girls

Still don't like the way kids are made to go through pain and don't have a choice about the outcome ?

Many women who have had this barbaric practice carried out on them have complications and difficulty in giving birth. Not to mention problems with their hygiene and periods.

As a man I cannot even contemplate how horrific it must be for someone to have this forced on them ! Is it carried out by other women or men ?

I think that it's carried out by the rabbi to the Jewish boys ? ( I could be wrong ) do they have medical training ?

Rabbis do have a small amount of medical training, but it's a very simple procedure when done on an 8 day old baby boy - one quick snip and it's done with little or no blood because of the lack of fully-developed capillaries in the foreskin. Most Rabbis use an analgesic cream these days.

they are basically turned into lumps of meat for man pleasure, as cutting away their clitoris will remove all sexual pleasure as the g spot is the back of the clitoris that is also removed

image having to go through life just being there to provide sex and kids for your husband but not being allowed to get any pleasure from it

men who have had their foreskin removed still have a healthy sex life after

not quite sure where the docking of dogs tails comes into it but on the surface te practice of circumcison for both males and females is done for very different reasons and include drastically different methods.

Male circumcision is for (aside from religious reasons) cleanliness, medicinal reasons etc. When done at a young age it causes very little distress to the child. When done as an adult its slightly more traumatic and only ever done when necessary.

Female circumcision (otherwise known as female genital mutilation, FGM) is a barbaric and horrific act carried out to control women, to ensure that the woman feels no pleasure during sex and to provide greater tightness to the vagina to improve sex for the men. The process can involve piercing the clitoris, cutting it, removing it completely, removing the clitoris and the labia minora, removing the clitoris labia minora and labia majora,sewing the labia shut - leaving just a small opening through which the woan has to urinate from, menstruate through, have sex through and give birth through. It is a procedure that is never medically necessary.

By a qualified medical professional who is also especially certified as a mohel.

Again thanks for the education I suppose my main question was why are these things done when the child they are being done too has no choice ?

After all its their body and because of their age the decision is taken for them?

if that is the argumet then i guess you could put ear piercng in the mix too then as that is punhing a hole in a childs ear just to look pretty. a lot of people get their childs ears pierced at very young ages before they can say whether they want it or not.

(before everyone jumps on me......i am in no way saying this is comparable with FGM)

Just to throw a spanner in the works...

In the states as soon as you know you're having a boy you are provided with info re circumcision i.e. what happens, risks, benefits... and the decision is a medical one based on the info, just as it is on the vaccinations or treatments they give to newborns. It's not a willy nilly decision made on a whim.

As for fgm, i don't think its comparable in any way. The comparison i think of between the two is removing the clitoral hood, though that would still be more complex that foreskin removal.
