Whats the best music video of.......whenever? impossible to say as most people will just pick their favourite track from their favourite artist, or go with the usual bohemian rhapsody/ thriller trotted out on every 'worlds greatest' TV show without thinking about what makes it a good video.

As someone who has studied the art for the best part of 15 years, directed several music videos and worked on numerous others- the best music video is something that compliments the track perfectly, re-enforces what the song is about or works with a little element so the two interlink perfectly. It should make you sit up and notice when played, be visually striking and/or breaking new ground of the art form. ideally it should give a 50/50 balance between music and video and preferably leave you thinking they're perfectly matched and no other video could ever work as well with the piece (trickier than you think)

Thriller was more a case of 'heres a stupidly large budget- lets make a film instead' and in terms of what was happening in the film industry it did nothing, broke no ground and any artist/director given that much budget could have produced something of that scale.

The best video of the 21st century is probably one of the OK Go, who are masters of the single take video

Their first video was a low budget affair (as they were still a small cult band). The result was due to clever thinking, lots of hard work practicing and some good viral promotion and has been copied to some degree several times for adverts

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTAAsCNK7RA

Then there is this little gem- not an original idea but fantastically well executed

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qybUFnY7Y8w

then they had an idea for a video and wrote a track to fit it- more meticulous planning to execute this beauty

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MejbOFk7H6c

and if you want a masterclass in single shot, precision planned shooting and dedication to producing something that leaves you wondering how they did it, how long it took and wanting to watch it over and over to see everything going on......

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2fpgpanZAw&list=TLWzKhXdQbGEys1hd487lUlB-SvsdgUJOy

Then there was 'This too shall pass' Which was both a stand alone video but also came with its own website that utilised the freshly released HTML5 browser technology that allowed you to type a message which was then shown in the video (just try it, its too hard to explain how they did it)- you'll need to run it in a HTML5 compatible browse like Google Chrome.

http://www.allisnotlo.st/index_en.html

Moving outside of the 21st century, the 90's were a particularly special time for music video as some very talented directors were emerging and honing their skills.

One of the most striking videos (and the one that inspired me to want to try directing) was Jonathan Glaziers video for U.N.K.L.E's 'Rabbit in your headlights' which is an immensely powerful visual film. While only having a loose link to the track, it does sit very nicely with it (almost cinematically) although it does feel like it over powers the music.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsg1y2ZrPfA

the first time i saw it i actually sat motionless for the whole thing, drink poised on my lip, totally engrossed!

The unbeaten king of the music video though is Michel Gondry- 100% genius!

I still don't know how he does many of his effects as his vision, production and post production is just flawless

from his early work such as 'Lucas with the lid off' (can you work out how the shots join together?)

http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=lucas+with+the+lid+off+official+video

the psychedelic flow editing of The Chemical Brothers 'Let forever be'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5FyfQDO5g0

the beuatifully shot, single take of Massive Attack 'Protection', for which he built a giant rotating cube building and camera gimbal

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJ2GXcVxXT0&list=PL5F67175A34FF9DD9&index=5

His fantastic planing and use of motion control for Kylie 'Come in to my world'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Fe1Scu5fdw

the headfuck of a pallendromic duel screen video for Cibo Matto's 'Sugar Water'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EN9auBn6Jys

and the total genius that is The Chemical Brothers 'Star Guitar'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=615FUp8aUmU

a video so subtle and well executed, its often overlooked whats actually happening for quite a while

(even better is how he proved it could be done using the contents of his fruit bowl in the street)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cespq6PlwDI

but for me, the best ever and most perfect video ever made is Chris Cunningham's exquisite film for Bjork's 'All is full of love' - the perfect combination of a beautiful track and a stunning video that compliments perfectly, getting round the guideline on broadcasting 'explicit' images by using robots, not humans, the amazing technical achievement of not only pulling off mapping Bjorks face onto the robots, but also designing, building and programming the robots himself.

It is a masterpiece to rival any film

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjI2J2SQ528

So? still think Thriller or Bohemian Rhapsody are the best music videos?

I'm talking about production, not subject. Yank videos are often way too clean and over worked in post production- a bit like a lot of Americans really

...Up on the Downs

"

So? still think Thriller or Bohemian Rhapsody are the best music videos? "

Thriller - frankly yes. I have looked at all the links you posted, and as a former creative director myself I still hold the same _iew.

You were only 10 of course when Thriller came out, so way too young to have partaken in the immense buzz it created, or have any memory of the direct impact it had upon you and your peers. It was huge, and for that reason, and the phenomenal sales 'success' that followed that went to demonstrate the truth of the worldwide impact of both the track and the video, I still do not think it will ever be matched.

I can appreciate the 'Heath Robinson' one take video and the mesmerising nature of Bjork's, but neither have even a tiny a fraction of the impact that Thriller had.

We all love different videos for different reasons because of their impact and association for us, not just a 'professional opinion' on the skill of their making. This, for instance is one of my favourites of recent years, not only for it's simplicity, and the fact that it employed two of my favourite dancers, but mostly for those two 'looks' that were captured.

It'll never be matched because it occurred at a unique moment when MTV was born and the internet and having 100's or even 1000's of channels available 24/7 365 on demand anywhere was just a distant dream, plus the music industry was an entirely different animal and the budgets were ridiculous and the music video was still finding its feet and reserved for the big boys and those the industry deemed financially viable- now you can get a half decent video made for less than a grand by advertising on various sites as every media student has their oen camera or access to some really good kit and the desire to build a portfolio, so they'll work for nothing. trying to compare then to now is pointless and its not really an indication of is the video good, more did it stand out at the time and did it have a 7 figure production and marketing budget.

I certainly wouldn't call the 24 hour time lapse with its meticulous planning 'Heath Robinson', its not like you can just pop outside with your camera phone and knock out a similar thing with 5 minutes planning?

To be fair to the director of BR, it was a last minute thing as Queen were due on a big tour and unavailable for shows like TOTP so the video was shoehorned into the band schedule. And it was the 70's so visual effects were pretty minimal without having huge pots of cash and time to plan and implement it

Exactly my point, at the time it was momentous, and that 'greatness' has never been equalled IMO.

And I was not dissing the Heath Robinson, on the contrary it was the one I watched right through. Just not in the same league as Thriller IMO.

but that was my point, you can't judge one against the other on unequal terms. you can judge them equally on artistic merit, inventiveness, suitability to the music/narrative....things that don't change.

Thriller might have been bigger than most other music videos but it was little more than a big budget extension of John Carpenters previous production, An American Werewolf in London- he was just given a film budget for a music video which is too often overlooked.

Now if he'd managed to knock that out on a £5-10k budget which is about average for a music video now (outside of the 1Direction/Elbow/Kylie type acts which average around the £30-60K range) it might have been more impressive.
