.

Believe it is normal practice.

If not you just lose/forget them if they not yours and you expect them to be replaced. If they are yours you will make sure you collect them at the end of the day and you look after them

As far as I know, the motor trade has bought their own tools for donkeys years! I am a tool wholesaler and I sell to the van guys who visit garages and also to factors. Without exception, all normal tools are the resposibility of the user in the garages my guys deal with.

Only difference is for what can be termed either capital equipment (large and expensive! )and tools that are used by everyone in the place but not very often, such as the large coil spring compressors @ about £400

"have to buy their own tools in the building/motor trade?"

Its common practice as so much would get lost or go missing. Working with insolvent companies often garages and more recently builders we instruct bailiffs to always leave tools as they are in 99% of cases individual owned up to a certain point size wise. It makes getting into some trades prohibitively expensive.

best advice is to buy the best you can afford ie snap on or mac they got a life time garentee,

the cheap ones cost you more in the long run

Iv`e still got some i bought 30yrs ago

Not if you work for a prestigious German sports car manufacturer just like i used to do.

They provide all tools required to do your job. Not a red Snap On tool box or tools in sight.

Yes my son is a mechanic and had to buy all his own tools and the storage unit.

The garage where my son works, has a company called Snap On come round every week, the guy that comes has sale stuff, plus lets him pay so much per week

Try looking in your colleague's sheds, I'd wage £1,000 that that's where they put them down last and can't remember.
