A meal before swimming does not work, and I can't do carbs - so what do people use for 'fuelling' an active session of some kind? " Banana..eat it..don't shove it up ya chuff. | |||

Yes I think they would work for me, porridge is too fast burn for my metabolism, I have to avoid high GI foods generally, but I have never noticed a problem with a green apple, and nut butter would slow it down further. I did have some peanuts before but maybe not enough. | |||

" I think I'm OK there thanks, I have perfect blood pressure and a naturally slow pulse, I've always been pretty good at endurance. But I do get mild rebound hypoglycaemia, so I know exactly what it feels like. | |||

If not some nuts or something fatty maybe??" A protein shake does not spike insulin unless it's loaded with dextrose or other simple carbs ( but then its not really a protein shake given the protein is then the minor component) pure protein will not cause much of an insulin rise. Will provide piss all fuel as well though. So is useless for you needs still. | |||

Will provide piss all fuel as well though. So is useless for you needs still." Whey protein is indeed insulinaemic, that's why I stopped using it. I may have to do some new research. In horses for instance lipid fuelling is used more for slow burn endurance activity, it is only 'sprint' work that needs carb loading per se, whereas excess dietary protein will be converted into glucose and it seems can bypass some problematic pathways. I just wondered what other people are eating, I've never had to consider it before. | |||

"Id do slow release food a couple of hours before exercise. Digestion is started, and no spikes of anything should happen. Porridge was a great suggestion but dont add sugar or honey. Bananas are my faster releasing energy of choice. Most of the drinks you see are sugars loaded and not so healthy or good value. " Yes, I never use those. Most pure carb foods are too fast for me, so either I have to go for protein or more fat content to slow it down, like nuts. I swim at different times of day, and I guess this was pretty late, 8pm. I often have a low carb protein bar at about 5 but I didn't have one today. | |||
