I would take the first seriously until you do get it verified as the impact on your car insurance will be severe it must be confusing, hope you get the help you seek. | |||

"I'm a bit confused.. are there any optometrists here? I went for an eye test at my local Tesco two weeks ago. Their result was a huge jump in my prescription from -2.75/-2.50 to -3.25/-3.00. Today I went for an eye test and contact lens check at Spec Savers. Their result was completely different! -2.75 for both eyes. The same for my contact lens. I queried the results as I was under the impression contacts should be a little weaker than glasses. I really don't know what to do now. The Tesco lot told me my old glasses were borderline illegal to drive with yet Spec savers said they're only marginally out.. I cant keep going to different optometrists, it's costing me a fortune and making me a very confused bunny! Any help gratefully received "I misread hence the above deleted comment 
Your optical prescription can vary by half a dioptre day to day. The main check is can you read a car registration plate from 20 meters?
And you're right, if you're a plus prescription your contact lenses are usually higher and if you're a minus prescription, they're usually lower due to 'spec mag'. This is because contact lenses are sat on the eye but spectacle lenses are in front of the eye.
I'm not a great fan of the jolly green giant or a supermarket when it comes to have my eyes or contact lenses checked and much prefer an independent. You see the same people all the time and if there's an issue, there is someone to take responsibility - not just a faceless corporation. You'll pay more but your sight is worth every penny.

I've always used Spec savers but the sheer difference in what is essentially a medical prescription has me worried. I thought a bigger place with the all singing and dancing machines would give a more accurate diagnosis.. apparently not  | |||
