I really don't like them!! Think kids should be encouraged to compete and learn to loose!!! We are bringing up a generation of kids who are not being prepared for the real world!! Do people think there will be "non-competitive" job interviews ect for these children!!

What are other peoples views on this??

I think there's enough kids being brought up as losers not to get too worried.

I agree with you basic point though. Do the best you can and be happy.

They have to compete in life anyway from jobs to getting a meet on here so might as well start young.

Our kids school sports days (different ages on different days) were boring and non competitive. I must adnit to getting near to falling asleep. It wasn't that much fun for the kids either. They thought it was fun but not the good old fun we had as kids

For some kids who have low self esteem, a little 'win' is worth a lot to them even if it's not a 'real' one. It is to them. I'd hope by secondary school a more competitive spirit is developed and those who aren't good at sports are given the opportunities to win competitively at other things.

My sons school did both this year, one non competitive and one competitive. The kids enjoyed the non comp one very much, it was like playing great games to them. They also had a sense of pride in where they finished in the other one. I think there's nothing wrong with it. I wonder if we aren't biased toward competition because that's how we were raised and therefore 'what we know'. I look back on that and see not only learning how to lose, but the resulting bullying and feelings of worthlessness that didn't need to happen. It still bugs me no end to see parents pushing in the extreme or berating children for losing at anything. We often complain that children these days grow up too fast, yet few question how they sometimes contribute to that.

Our country is not site at sports. We do rather well in the world stakes.

Yes it's good to promote a competitive streak, but the education system is there to promote many values, and I guess team working and valuing others is a pretty good virtue to have later on in life.

Maybe it's the "Britain is crap" attitude that's the problem.

my 3 kids have gone to 3 different senior Schools in the Halifax area. All the complaints i have with modern schooling the kids have been schooled with propper sports and winning mentality both in sport and in written lessons

We do both... Non-competitive in the morning so everyone can feel successful then really competitive in the afternoon! Lmao

Actually there are plenty of sports we are good at international level. Cycling for one. Did you miss all the medals at the Olympics?

I can see both sides. I think it is worth considering tgat our society is becoming increasingly obese and lazy. Teachibg kids that sport and exercise is something that can be done purely for fun and self-satisfaction is not a bad thing.

It's a stupid idea and one that's mostly out of fashion now. Sports are about developing character and you can't do that without learning to understand sport, which means dealing with losing.

There are many physical activities children can do that don't require competition. Diminishing sport isn't necessary.

Is it just me or are our national teams such as England's footballers and cricketers doing their utmost best to demonstrate this non-competitive sports principle.

Seems the more they are paid the less succesful they become.

I used to love sports day, ok.I couldn't run, crap at the high and long jump and being white I couldn't high jump. I used to do it as the comic element, I always tried my hardest but knew I.had chance of winning.

I think what it the point of non competative sports day, we need to lose so we fight more to win.

If i was a parent i'd love to take part in the non competitive dads race- the perfect chance to take the piss.

Starting gun goes off (or the flag waved- wouldn't want to scare the poor ickle sprogs eh?) then stroll along until you get to the middle- then stop and pull out a bag of crisps for an energy boost (or a pint for maximum effect). then amble to the finish and ask for your medal.

Non competitive sports days are unfair on the children who are good at sports. On the academic side we don't have non competitive G.C.S.E results. Our future employers don't give us the job just because we turned up for our exams. The employers give us the job because we competed and won the grade.

Kids who academically excel are rewarded through their harf work. They get praise from all areas and a higher chance for a good job. Kids who are not academically good tend to be better at sports. We are taking away their chance to prove themselves. Our schools should teach that some are good at sports. Some are good academically and some are good at both. Try hard even at the things you are not good at and you will more self respect. We don't get given an A just for going to the exam.

Don't remove the competitive edge to sports day but also celebrate the children's improvement. Beating their previous best should be celebrated. For those children who don't win a race there could be a trophy for the most improved performance

Primary schools do seem to do non-competitive Sports Days , but the Senior Schools I know - Sports Day is competitive. What I like about the non- competitive sports day is the different age groups helping each other and just enjoying it.

I've also recently watched local primary schools do their inter- linked athletics event - that's truly competitive and the kids love it !
