Sexual Orientation

I was recently asked to fill in an application form for a recruitment agency, and whilst there was the usual questions one I've not come across before was sexual orientation? there were a few options but it got me wondering. Would you answer the question truthfully or put down what you think they'd be looking for?

And just to point out, this company asked for sexual orientation and religion, but didn't ask for references...

It's illegal in the United Kingdom to question the sexual orientation of a current or prospective employee, take a copy of the form down to your solicitor and watch the money roll in....

Its not illegal im afraid, all the application forms ive completed in the last 5 yrs, including temp contract ones all have it on their forms. It is to ensure that companies are not discriminating against homosexuals, bisexuals, etc, you dont have to say as they include other, they know that people wont say, i didnt tick the bisexual box on any of the ones i did because i prefer to keep it quiet outside of a few family members and friends

But surely if its an application form they would have no idea of your sexual orientation anyway what they going to do employ bi and gay people just to be politically correct

Surely then if they're offering an interview based on sexuality then you could tick that yer gay or bi just to ensure you get an interview?

What I mean is how can you prove that you are what you've put on the form? It all seems a bit PC to me

Never heard of a pansexual

I have also seen it on many forms including from my local council and a huge German company i was applying for a job for.

Didn't really bother me to be honest, i just filled the thing in.

It's illegal under the Sexual Discrimination Act; Sex Discrimination (Indirect Discrimination and Burden of Proof) Regulations 2001 ;2005 SDA amendment.

It was brought in to stop the Armed Forces and the Police force in particular from assertaining the sexual preferences of potential recruits.

It is also covered by the Homan Rights Directive of the EU from 1st December 2003.

Pansexuality (also referred to as pans), or omnisexuality[1], is a sexual orientation, characterized by the potential for aesthetic attraction, romantic love, or sexual desire towards people, regardless of their gender identity or biological sex. Some pansexuals suggest that they are gender-blind; that gender and sex are insignificant or irrelevant in determining whether they will be sexually attracted to others.[2] For others, an individual's sex, gender expression, or gender identity can be a key factor of attraction, despite the pansexual individual's wide range of sex and gender attractions.

Why not admit being bisexual do you mean? Because at the time i was very new into ladies, whilst i was fairly comfortable with it, I was not comfortable with coming out to that extent, plus my kids didnt see why everyone should know; they were quite happy with the small group that know and i respected their choice. Also i dont trust personnel departments not to keep it quiet.

Where i am now, there is a very religious woman i have to work closely with, she thinks we should burn in hell, sort of

They are chancing their arm hoping that the new government will find a way to opt out of the EU human rights regulations......the Police and Armed Forces have dropped it though

yes because after my first encounter with a woman, i wanted to shout it from the rooftops as i was so happy but was wary of who i should talk too, luckily the kids were okay with it, theyve gay friends and they just see them as friends its everyone else and ive worked out who its fine to tell and who not too, only one friend at work knows.

the thing is though, that people will not be honest so they are never going to prove it was a worthwhile exercise, nor that it covers equal opportunities

Until 1995 (from 1982)it was compulsory to state your sexual orientation when applying to join the Metropolitan Police Force, basically if you put your hands up to being Gay or Bisexual you were never going to get into the Met.

From 1995 to 2001 it was not a compulsory part of the application form to fill in.....but failure to do so was taken as an admission, and you wouldn't be accepted anyway.

Then in 2001 that was removed from application forms, much to the disgust of the shadow home secretary.

So I suspect it may be introduced once again within the next couple of years.

i keep my sexuality private at work now. this is because of two jobs i've had where i was naive enough to tell them i was in a relationship with a woman. the first job wasn't too bad, i was leaving when i told them anyhow. the second job, although only part-time i had to get me through a college course and depended on it financially.

one of my so called friends went to my manager and accused me of sexually harassing her! my manager told me at my desk (i worked in a call centre). when i went to see the trade union, they just told me to keep away from her!

im now very cautious who i tell.

i work in the nhs and on our applications (which are online) ask for your sexual orientation, i just tick the box, i do not wish to disclose.

Is that not in itself a form of "bullying?" Your Manager should not only know better but should show some decorum....

I hope all was resolved? as A Union Rep. You should take that further.

As soon as any legislation comes into being which says you cannot discriminate against X, Y or Z.... they (employers - usually HR dept.) feel the need to monitor whatever it is to prove they are not discriminating... even though we can all see it would be less possible to discriminate if they didn't know.

A few years ago the company I was working for was "screening" application forms for a job that had come up, they made the receptionist blank out the sex, disability or lack of disability, age, marital status and a few other things. When I asked why they did that I was told that it made sure that the people who got interviews were the people who had experience in the job field, and when they had decided who was getting the interviews they would then look at the entire application form, and often hired the person with the age closest to retirement age, since "they wont take time off for being d*unk the night before" as the assistant personnel manager said

I have applied for hundreds of jobs in the last 10 years and never answered any question about my sexuality since I dont think it makes any matter of odds to how well I can do the job I apply for.

I had to look this up!

Pansexuality:

Our sexuality, like our feelings, can be directed in varying amounts and manners towards people of all sexual persuasions, ages, appearances, towards animals, inanimate objects or ourselves; even towards the living, dead and the imaginary.

The company I work for their application form has personal details on the first three pages and the last page covers etnicity, gender etc.

Only personnel see the full application.

Those of us on the interview panel see only the section of the application related to the person specification. Qualifications are shown but not schools as they can be gender specific.

That way those called for interview match the person specification and the job regardless of age, gender etc.

I think questions regarding your sexual orientation are unfair - a bit like asking somebody to reveal their religion or political views. How can it possibly affect how you do your job?
