Its a con. My best mate works for Microsoft and said its an on going problem. They wouldn't know if u had any issues like that. And he said it would be his department if anyone called in with issues. If they ring again you just tell them they have been recorded and reported. The calls soon stop

We get these at work too.

My friend has been telling them that it's a brothel, so they shouldn't call back and tie up her line!

I am amazed anyone would fall for these, someone phones up to tell you there is a problem with your computer which isn't switched on - ffs.

Oh, how do you there's a problem?

Because all microsoft techs are psychic!

The tossers that make these calls must think we are brain dead but having said that I know of at least 2 people that fell for it cost them money to have their pc sorted

I don't see why there's any need to be rude to cold callers. Just say "no thank you not interested" and hang up.

They are humans.

No, haven't had any calls like that. I tend not to answer numbers I don't recognise, hide their number or 'out of area'. If it's something important, they'll either leave a message or ring back. I have on occasion typed the number on google; it can bring up sites to tell you who had phoned you.

Be rude because they are trying to rob you of your hard earned cash. They are no better than muggers. It is a scam - google ammyy scams.

The calls seem to come in cycles - I assume they leave an area fallow for a while after they've worked it. I've had as many as 3 in a day but not had one for months now.

I once had a call asking *Asian accent* "do you have a mobile phone?"

"Yes... " I replied " you're phoning me on it

I enjoy winding people up who call me. My mum complains about it getting boring whenever she calls. No sense of humour. You'd think after 15 years or so of me pissing about every time she rang she'd appreciate the effort by now.

I'm never rude to them but re the "Microsoft" calls, it is out of order that they call purely to scam you

I try to be extra nice to the genuine ones trying to sell something, as I assume most of them are just doing their job. No, I'm not gullible or a soft touch

It does get annoying saying, "no thank you" over and over though .

They aren't cold callers, they are thieves. They try to trick people into giving them remote access to their computers, lock it up then charge to "fix" it.

If someone tried to pickpocket you would you say "excuse me but please take your hand out of my pocket and stop stealing from me, thank you".

Not these one's. They typically are there to con you into giving them access to your PC so that they can mine it for bank information and steal your money... they are criminals pure and simple. the longer you keep them on the line feeding them garbage the less chance they have of getting onto someone vulnerable and mugging them over the phone.

I once asked the guy how his mother was, after some distraction and discussion he told me she was fine. so I asked if she was proud of him, this caused some confusion as he asked me why I would be asking that question, so I said is your mother proud that you are a thieving scumbag who preys on the vulnerable and the week, at which point he called me a series of names and hung up... didn't get any more calls for about a month after that.

I just string them along, making them think they have suckered me in and they are going to earn their commission..... Then at an appropriate point, blind then with jargon and ask if the picture of an Apple on the computer makes any difference? I get swore at, but come off the phone feeling satisfied

You do realise that many have to keep you talking or the line active for a certain time so an abrupt short call not letting them speak is far more irritating to them as calls are recorded and reviewed if very short.

Have not read all the posts, but it is a recognised scam to part you from your money for 'support'. Look in a search engine. Do not speak with them or provide any details.

I do that too. Except I pretend I'm trying to follow there instructions. Eventually I might tell them I don't use windows but it can be fun listening to them trying to follow their script.

For anyone that doesn't know the purpose of the call is to get you to visit a website that installs malware (either a keylogger or remote access) onto your machine.

I wish they'd ring my mobile so I can record it

That is for cold callers which, no matter how annoying, is a legitimate job. The people this thread is on about are just plain criminals.

The more people that keep cold callers talking the better. They only do it because it pays, if we keep them talking without buying anything then it will eventually make it uneconomical.

Yes but these people are very different from a lot of cold callers, they don't want leads, they will try and take your money there and then and are happy to prey on the vulnerable if they can scar them enough. They will earn commission if they take money from you, so leading them into thinking they are earning, thus preventing them from making other calls to someone who might be more vulnerable has to be a worthwhile move.

There is wilder generation who have not bee brought up on computers but who own them and use them because that us the way of the way of the world these days. Unfortunately, many simply know how to switch them on and connect to a browser or Skype, anything else and it would be very easy for companies like the ones subject to this thread to pull wool over their eyes. The less that happens, the better.
