My plug doesn't work

I filled the sink up and the water slowly drained away even though it seemed snug

You probably need a new sink in order to get the plug operating correctly. Possibly complete new kitchen.

It's draining through the the plug hole fixing... Thats the bit you put the plug in. Around that you'll find that the sealant has perished and the water will go into the catch area underneath. This is why you don't have a big puddle. Make sure area is dry. Then wack some cilicon sealant around it. Worked for me when I had the same problem. X
