Sex and exploitation

Red light districts, paid web cam girls, strip clubs....they all feature girls who aren't necessarily there out of joy...but out of desperation or perhaps because they're being exploited by pimps. For that reason I find it hard to get over my feminist sensibilities and enjoy them...I just find myself overwhelmed with a sadness and a feeling of being troubled by the thought that I am unwittingly propping up somebody else's hell.

In particular I find web cams really troubling as it's clear that many of them are from far away foreign countries and the women in them could easily be being abused or held prisoner in order to earn their captors money.

What do you lot make of all this? Can you buy into the fantasy and forget the reality? Or is the reality just too dark to ignore?

Black&White Utopia

Think there are always times when reality needs to be right there in all out faces as top priority... Also , tho agree with all you are saying, must add its the demand for all this stuff that makes it readily supplied.. Lots of money in sex ... Unfortunatly total greed and unsavoury people feed on this... To the detriment if others

Absolutely not, don't watch, listen to or get involved in anything that isn't consenting and legal, find it totally abhorrent. My heart breaks for the poor exploited people

There is something about strip clubs that makes my skin crawl. I find them utterly unsexy.

I think that is because they are not about sex, but actually are more about the fetishisation of money.

This has lead to a slight reputation amongst my friends for me being very straight laced.....if only they knew.....

Phew!! There was me thinking I was a freak lol In the name of curiosity and adventure I managed to convince a bunch of mates that were on a crazy road trip with me to hit a strip club when we were in Las Vegas (think 'the hangover' and you're in the right ball park )

Almost the second we walked in I wanted to leave...which was a bugger because we had to pay some exorbitant fee to get in. My mates were all able to get into it but I just couldn't see past the fact that it was all about money, just like you said Jimi. Similarly to you I think my mates probably got the wrong end of the stick and came away thinking I was a bit of a prude. Instead, I realised the moment I walked in there, I was looking for something real...a sexy connection with a person that was flirtatious and real.

After we spilled out of that joint the night descended into chaos and I can't remember much...but one of us woke up without shoes and I think I ended up in a bar standing on a piano with a Rod Stewart look-a-like trying to chat up some random woman who was probably with a bloke...lol I love it when a plan falls apart

I really thought that story was going to end with the random woman being the Rod look-alike and you ending up in bed discovering it was Rod.

Strip clubs, porn, chat cams etc. all scream of sexploitation to me and I don't watch them.

Central

There are obviously some poor souls who are abusively treated around the sex industry. But there are also many who are not, so it is better for people to engage with people in more enlightened places.

Just remember op there will just many feminists saying the exact same thing about you. How you must be here because your being manipulated or abused or forced by your partner.

Cam girls is a pretty innocent one a cheap investment in a camera and bang after your day job you can potentially earn a lot of money every night.

Even more if you've got a partner who's up for it too.

No its too scripted and yes it's always in the back of your mind, no matter how good the acting...do they really want to be there ?

I'm not suggesting that every actor is subjected to it, but human trafficking is a very real phenomena, and it doesn't necessarily manifest itself like people envisage it.

Pornography has turned people on for centuries and that's fine but there's some very seedy individual's within the industry who exploit people with no scruples whatsoever.

Loads are not involved with pimps etc but many are living with a drink or drug addiction so keeping down a normal job is near impossible or it could just be a very smart girl making a ton of money

Sex is big business and the reality is the girls don't really like it or love it just like the money and think its good money for the work and its a big trap to get out of

It is work at the end of the day very dangerous but still work and yes there will always be people that want to exploite people both sex industry or via other ways if it makes money someone will want to get involved

I live near a area where I see street girls and its so sad they have a really rough life and spend hours standing in the cold

I don't really have a problem with the sex industry and/or prostitution existing. Heck I don't even have a problem with strip clubs and web cams existing. I'd like to imagine that a fair percentage of girls involved in any of these are having a bit of fun whilst earning good money. Maybe I'm naive, but I tend to see porn as sexual theater and, in that sense, I don't actually think there's as much exploitation in it as some think. Obviously you get the whole 'reality porn' genre which opens up the possibility that what you're getting horny on might actually be considered a rape by the person tricked into doing it.

As long as there are ugly or anti-social guys with money in their pockets there will be paid sex...and, to be honest, I think that's a good thing as long as the exchange is mutually beneficial.

The real problem I can't get my head around is not that all the girls I see in these places or on web cam are kidnapped and being held as sex slaves by domineering drug dealing violently abusive pimps...but rather the thought that one of them might be....and it's impossible to tell which. I guess it's a glass half empty view rather than a glass half full view. I know men who'd be more than happy paying web cammers for sex, imagining that they're probably people much like themselves, just trying to make some extra money. And indeed 9 times out of 10 they probably are. But once you've seen a film like "Lilya 4-ever" the thought suddenly strikes you..."what if the girl I'm looking at is one of those ones abducted into sex slavery and I'm part of her chain of abuse?" ...and I just can't get past that.

People aren't necessarily kidnapped in the true sense.

Passports are taken from them...They become dependant on the exploiter as they have no connections, money, friends or means and suddenly the are in the pocket of others.

Yes of course as you suggest there are many willing participants in the sex industry, but there's lots of exploited, vulnerable people too.

On face value it can be a big turn on, but below the surface there's a human face to it all.
