A Malaysian airliner with 295 people on board has crashed in Ukraine near the border with Russia, on a flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, reports say.

2 in the space of a couple of months

moscow have gone awfully quiet.....

If it were flying West to East, then possibly the rebels/separatists/freedom fighters/munchkins* thought it was a large transport plane or spy plane. A few Ukrainian transports have been shot down. Errors in judgement can happen.

In light of a number of posts above, this may sound harsh and cynical but get real, where have you been in the last 5, 10, 15, 50 years or so?

Even if the "majority russians in Eastern Ukraine" who'd rather be part of Russia are responsible, it is still a drop in the ocean for the number of deaths that such as the US ( Bush and Obama) with us tagging along, are responsible for.

Why only recently, Obama sought $500m funds for arming and training the Syrian terrorists/ISIS/freedom fighters whatever so they could bring down the Government.

Don't the US call it "collateral damage".? Always have, always will.

the problem is that there is a "no-fly" zone over that part of the world.... but it only goes up to a certain level, and that is well below where passenger aircraft fly at....

the question is going to be if russia specifically supplied this sort of weaponry to the seperatists.... then the sanctions are going to be rampped up

Only the Russian Buk missile has the range to destroy an aircraft at an altitude over 21,000 ft.

This was not your typical shoulder launched SAM.

Questions have to be asked as to who fired this weapon

Pretty sure it will be the pro Rusian militia , but doubt they realised it was a passenger plane , In No Way Excusing It , but as they had shot down to Ukranian Transports Recently I reckon that's what happened ! Perhaps the people who invented and manufacture all these Weapons should start to take a long Hard Look !!!!! Or am I asking too much ? Ps I don't care what country , couler , creed ect ! It seems there were some leading virologists on board heading to a HIV / AIDS conference in Brisbane these petty fuckwits have destroyed life and to some hope.

What's even worse is that over 100 passengers were travelling for a conference about AIDS and it's cure. They were all experts in the field. Medical giants who had been studying and looking for a cure from the disease.

In terms of medical science - it's a huge loss to knowledge.

it weird because there was very much a stunned shock from some of the hardest blokes i know, because they all knew john enough to say hello and drink with on matchdays....

a lot of people wouldn't have known his name... but if you had said "undertaker" you would know exactly who it was..... you get a lot of football fans like that, and in a sense he was one of "us" and that could have been any of us.....

did pass st james's on the way home, and will take some flowers up their tomorrow

The route the plane was flying is an *incredibly* important, and popular corridor for flights between Asia and Europe. Also between the Middle East and Russia/eastern Europe. There were literally thousands of flights every day flying over this bit of airspace.

I can understand why people are asking this question but it is NOT RIGHT to try and make a scapegoat out of ICAO, EASA or the Ukrainian ANSP's for allowing civil flights in upper airspace in the area.

It's also unfair to blame Malaysian Airways for this tragedy (the only people to blame are those who shot the missiles, and the huge list of operators who are now refusing to fly over Eastern Ukraine AFTER this tragedy speaks volumes for how many already were using the route), or for MH370 (as quite simply, we still don't know what happened).

I sincerely hope that this doesn't kill of Malaysian Airlines, they are a fantastic operator who (prior to this year) had only had two fatal incidents one of which was due to a hijacking.

Sorry if this comes across as a bit angry/defensive but I work in the industry and really, really dislike the way that the media are trying to find someone other than the attackers to blame.

I flew Malaysia Airlines lots of times and it's one of few operators given the 5 star status (Skytrax).

They used to fly along the india-mideast-europe corridor but only this year they started to use the central-asia corridor (got a glance of the biggest lake in the world Caspian Sea recently in April 2014).

Why the change to this route this year (apart from being shorter/fuel efficient) im not sure, but maybe to avoid the similarly volatile israel/syria air space??
