Some thieving scumbag has been robbing me

Seems I am a victim of internet fraud

I do my banking online and don't receive "paper statement" anymore. I must admit that I have been a bit lax, and haven't checked my bank account since January

Had a look this morning and noticed a few transactions that I didn't recognise so I called the bank, who put me onto the fraud dept.

Well I've been systematically robbed on a monthly basis since January, sometimes £150 a month, and at least £49.95 minimum. Some dot com shitbags have got hold of my debit card number and have been helping themselves.

The bank have cancelled all my cards and are issueing new ones, and say I will get my money back in about 10days, subject to their investigation.

The common theme is that all the people robbing me are "Customer Support" companies.

They have what looks like a genuine website with phone numbers and contact details. Sneaky bastards, but I can't help feeling "What a pratt" I've been.

I will be checking on a daily basis from now on

Hmmm The OH had this happen a couple of years ago.

His was only one month but they bought items on the internet that made up about £300. It was only because I knew he wouldn't have bought Itunes that I mentioned it so he checked it further. the bank said this is what the thieves do, they normally buy things for smallish amounts out so people don't notice it going. He did get it all back from the bank though after a couple of weeks.

the first thing all banks with internet banking facilities do is warn you never to store your details on your computer, or give out your pin number to anyone not even if it looks like an official web site of their own without first contacting the bank to confirm the e-mail is original ( most banks wont ask for details over the internet)(and only over the phone if you answer the security questions) i've banked online for over 10 years with no fraud

Up North :-)

Well it always is a prob doing things on line but the fekkers can nab you anytime. I have my visacard interfered with but was lucky as they spotted unusual activity and stopped it and it didn't cost me anything. Hopefully you two might be able to claim some of it back.

My OH does none of that and was a victim of fraud. As the OP says, the bank also thought it was a firm online he had bought something off that had passed on his details....probably sold them on.

a small PS most bank and credit cards now have a 3 or 4 digit security number on the reverse, i believe this activates a security system with in a program that once the transaction is done the details are deleted from the sending system

No one knows my passwords, pin numbers for anything that I do, not even Kate.

I usually only use my debit card for fuel purchases, and they are usually around the £40-£55 value.

My bank account has been plundered via my debit card for regular amounts of £39.95 and £49.95, so they would have been difficult to spot if I only looked at the values.

My guess is that I have handed my card over to someone, probably at a filling station who has copied my card and used the card details to set up a regular payment to a dot com company.

lol, if only I was....

I get paid the same amount of money monthly straight into my bank account. All my regular outgoings are by direct debit and standing order.

I mainly use my debit card for fuel. I only use cash for beer money or other low value out of pocket expenses.

I thought I could keep track of my spending in my head Seems I'm not that clever afterall

Reckon if anyone got hold of our details they'd take pity and put a few quid a month IN the account.

it dont think that whatever you do , buying / selling etc on the internet can be completely safe

one answer might be a seperate account thats only got the bare minimun in it and no overdraft facility to use for online transactions

at the end of the day its just another rip off that pisses us all off

Checked our CC account several months ago and found a transaction of 1p (only!) to a well-known electronics company. We contacted our CC customer services dept and were told that someone crooked had got details of our card. it was usual to try a very small debit to see if you noticed it, and if you didn't then regular amounts would be taken out, but not so large that you'd immediately be alerted.

They told us to destroy our card then issued another, and we've had no trouble since. What worries us is that someone in the major electronics company must have been in on the scam, otherwise they couldn't have told it had gone through OK.

there are scumbags everywhere, be on your guard!

Had my card cloned once, took me ages to realise, was just on a night out and suddenly had no cash.

On the plus side, if you haven't been noticing 150 quid out of your bank each month, then all it means is suddenly your going to get all your cash back and feel rather flush!

I had my card details scammed at a local supermarket about 3 years ago and over a week my bank account was cleared. 'Luckily' there was only about £300 in there but the buggers took it all. Most of the transactions were to a French utility company.

The bank were great though, as the amount taken was less than £500 they sorted it out locally without me having to wait forever to get it through their fraud team (although the fraud team and the police were obviously made aware).

Hope all goes well for the OP.

Ian had the same, bank said can you prove you not in eastern europe on the said days, lucky ian in hospital more than he's home, all we had to do was get the hospital to confirm his time in and that was that. But agree its the time it takes to put the money back in that a pain.

Sue

Know checking accounts LOL

they do say that its the unscrupulous garages who are most likely to clone your card or pass on details ??? so i guess if u use it regularly for fuel you are at risk ???..hope u get yuour money back real soon ..

This happened to a relative of mine to the tune of 5 grand.... fortunatley the bank were excellent and could pin point it to a local petrol station who it seems had done the same thing to several people...

Its a huge worry isn't it really that something like that could happen

I get a lot of junk mail/phishing scams that look very official, all the logos, names of client account advisors etc.. asking me to log into my bank account and renew my password etc.

I sent the mail to HSBC Fraud Dept (and Halifax, and Barclays, yes I've them all). HSBA responded by saying that they would NEVER send an email with a link on it asking you to log in. As policy they never include links in emails and that's one way of telling you that it's a scam.

The golden rule is to only go to the website directly by typing in the url. Never click a link to it and url's can be easily masked.

It's impracticle to change your password every month but every quarter isn't such a hardship and I have a list of 24 passwords that I rotate on a quarterly basis (not stored electronically) and those passwords include capital letters/lower case letters/numbers.

Never been caught out yet and never had any credit card fraud yet either, but I consider myself lucky as we do buy a lot online using our c/cards.

London and Cheshire

WARNING:

Their is a new scam going around called 'tab napping'! It is basically a phishing technique that can tell if you have browser tabs open.

So if you where doing your online backing and say looking at your credit card statement online(2 tabs open) when you go to the credit card website it will reload your banks login page with their own(looks very much like your own backs)it will state you have been disconnected and you need to re-enter your details, when you do they are sent to them.

Ways to get around this are ONLY have the website your looking at open(when using banking/credit card companies etc) or instead of using tabs, open a new browser window(CTRL + N)

for more info checkout this url:

http://uk.biz.yahoo.com/07062010/389/tab-napping-new-online-scam.html

This gives you more information on this.

Hope this helps everyone be more secure.
