Check in control panel thats its reporting as working- try installing the drivers again.

have you recently had any headphones plugged in? i had a similar problem with my Macbook as it has a combined headphone/optical port and it was stuck on optical- just needed a prod with a cocktail stick to free it up

Have you checked the bios ? If it's an on board soundboard it may have been disabled by accident. What version of windows are you using ?

I've not really dabbled with Windows since XP was the hot new thing, probably best to see if there is a help page for your machine or look on a Windows forum if the stick method doesn't work (you can tell if its a dual audio/optical port as it should have a red light inside it if its stuck open)
