London Grand Prix?

I've just been looking at BBC News.

Motor Races on public roads could be permitted following a possible change in legislation. This will come as a surprise to the local chaps and(allegedly) Fireblade who drive as if they are auditioning for the Cannonball Run already. Apparently it means more events and more money coming into the country. It also means more OAPs having a challenging time going to the shops, as it's not easy catching a bus when Lewis Hamilton is the driver. Or the driver thinks he is Lewis Hamilton.

There is talk about a possible London Grand Prix on the back of this legislation. However, I think it should have more of a British slant. Aggressive squeegee guys cleaning the cars on the starting grid, a dogging area off to one side of the track, some dodgy traffic lights that seem to be on green longer for the traffic going the other way and obviously anyone who is cut up has to make rude hand signals and then do a furious update on their facebook about it. The Pit Lane will consist of people who shake their heads and suck in air through their teeth.

I can't see why they'd need a change in legislation as Birmingham held street races for about 5 years. Not sure why it ended- probably either the usual council fuck up or the London lot getting a grump because something good was happening outside of the capital and they'd have to make a bloody effort to see it or get a decent back hander from it

haha it paints a funny picture, would add an attraction for me and make me take an interest in F1.

You could throw in parking wardens who will just pop out from nowhere if you stop for any reason.

cats and dogs run across the road from time to time.

Whats the facts behind Rallying in regards to, did they use to keep the clock running in between stages? Now they dont? Will that have any weight behind it in regards to changing the legistation back?

Mind you, it could be a Spectrum Game and some of those were in black and white....

I'd also like to see an old guy in a hat, driving a Morris Marina wander onto the circuit and insist on doing two laps before he spots his turning and then vanishes, non-the-wiser as to having been on a circuit.

There are annual closed road races all over the place. To my knowledge this year the Wallasey Motor Club Promenade Stages Rally will take place on Kings Parade New Brighton on September 6th.

I think it would be a great idea, race, show, the whole idea behind it. Most people know Monaco for the F1 before the other reasons, it would put London on a new map.

Its already an amazing sporting city, this would just add to it.

This is based on the Singapore F1 which is the nearest comparable current race to a proposed London one.

The race is co-funded by the Government of Singapore, footing 60% of the total bill, or £45 million out of a total tab of £75 million the rest is paid by a local broadcaster for local TV rights

A 25,000-strong workforce begin preparations four months before a race is due to take place. In a process rather like assembling the world's biggest Scalextric set, all race-related infrastructure will be taken out of a 38,000 square metre storage facility. There are thousands of items including concrete barriers, fences, cables, temporary bridges, ticketing booths and portable toilets. In total, 4,395 safety barriers and 10km of debris - or "catch" - fencing need to be erected.

The polymer modified binder laid on the track surface to offer vehicles 20% more grip, is inspected and necessary repairs carried out to ensure it is fit for Formula 1. A week before the race, 650 tonnes of F1 equipment belonging to race teams will arrive by air freight and truck load.

On the Wednesday before the Sunday of the race, the first of a series of gradual road closures begins. A complete closure takes place at least an hour before each session, with access restricted to vehicles with the relevant passes. After a final round of inspections, at 03:00 on Friday morning, the track is officially open for business.

Road restrictions are gradually lifted once the race is over, with the final road reopening to traffic in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The rest of the temporary infrastructure - barriers, advertising hoardings, buildings - begin coming down almost immediately after the race, but the process is only completely finished up to a month after the race.

birmingham had to get a special act of parliament to hol;d those races involving suspension of speed limits oneway streets etc . a similar order is used for the jim clerk rally and tour of mull both require the roads to be closed for use as stages .may see more closed road rallys on some of the quiet country lanes as happens on the isle of man and in ireland

but new brighton parade is a private road so does not need legislation for this thats why it is used "

I'll bow to your superior knowledge but last time I looked Kings Parade was part of the A554 and that is a public highway...

But what do I know...
