Hi everybody.

Next week, I (Cal) will be in Newcastle all week for a training course. As I'll be finished by 5 each day, I'm looking for some ideas for entertainment in the evening... Rather than sitting and watching the TV on my lonesome.

What would you all suggest?

Hi Sunrise, it's Cal (male)... but to be honest, I wasn't looking a meet... just something to entertain me. Anita is going to join me at the weekend and we're going to visit Club F on Saturday.

You have to go to the Bigg Market. Friday night if you are alone. Saturday night if you are with your partner.

If you have a car drive out the city to nothumberland it is lovely up there. You can take a look at Alnwick castle(used in the harry potter movies as Hogwarts)..

Personally i would take a tour round the holy shrine that is St James Park......

I'm not a footy fan at all, although the training is at St James' park.. so I'm sure I'll see the ground.

Anita will certainly enjoy the castle and shopping. ... that just leaves me looking for something to do in the evenings... does anyone know, is there anywhere that does live music mid week?

Tup tup is good bar to go to, and there is another over the road from there that's down a little walkway that turns into a big club

I was in no state to remember the babe I'm afraid

If you want a chill out afternoon take a walk along the river down the quayside to pitcher and piano, huge windows and just watch the day go by - great views

Avoid bigg market

Is the Marsden grotto still going? I think it was in South Shields, went there years ago, a bar cut into the rocks at beach level, a lift took you down from the cliff top. A quick metro ride & cab and you will be there in no time.

Leave as fast as you can and never return. It's a horrible place with horrible inhabitants who speak with an awful accent.

Ina addition to this I recommend The Stand. Always have a good time when I'm back down in the north east there on a Wednesday for amateur's night. Only £2 and a great laugh!

And to add to this as someone who's born in County Durham. The city of Durham is beautiful but there is pretty much sweet fuck all to do there. But if you're at Washington it's worth taking a trip to see the Cathedral.

Newcastle

I would take a look at lane 7. They have a bowling alley, pool, mini golf and a karaoke room.

There is some nice bars and things but it depends on what you are after. Blue velvet is the best strip club by all accounts.

The Baltic is good for a one off for some culture and art.

For fine food I highly recommend house of tides on the quayside but that's just me lol

im sorry, which part of the op or any other posts asked about sunderland, I responded to the op asking about newcastle with a fair comment, oh I see you picked on the fact im from sunderland and brought football into it, I never argued that sunderland wasnt a shithole and this is for many reasons, but I was born and bred here so its my shit hole, and I can accept its a shithole, can you accept that apart from your city centre, that has had millions invested in it, over the many more years it has had city status than sunderland has, is in fact a shit hole apart from its centre, probably not since your still clinging to a 5-1 victory when there have been 2 yes 2 0-3 drubbings, in your own backyard and a win on wearside since that day, if you want to live in football history lets bring up the historical 9-1 win eh lol, ask yourself how many of your worshipped footballers live in newcastle, or do they in fact live in pontierland, northumberland, durham, but thats just because you brought the subject up, back the op I stand by my original statement, newcastle has a good city centre, with good night life and many reasons to go there, but the surrounding areas are very undesirable.

"Go to Newcastle Castle and point out that is not a new castle but was indeed built in the 12th century, therefore their City should be renamed Oldcastle "

The castle was built on the site of an old wooden castle, originally built by one of the sons of William the Conqueror, so it was a 'New Castle' at the time.

pontierland is not newcastle, its like sunderland claiming durham within its boundaries, darrass hall is not in newcastle, most of sunderlands overpaid footballers dont live in sunderland, the same as newcastles dont live in newcastle, and look again I did not bring football or sunderland into this.

I stated newcastle has a good city centre with many reasons to go there/visit, in comparison to sunderland as it now seems to be the case, newcastle has had city status for a lot longer than sunderland, it has had millions of pounds invested into its development over those years, its only common sense that without going there you would know that newcastle would have a bigger city with more attractions, more to do, better facilities all because of those reasons, but ill state again I didnt start the comparison between sunderland and newcastle, it was started because I dared to comment and im from sunderland.

Sunderland has some nice areas but also many rundown crappy areas, the city centre leaves a lot to be desired but is developing, it will take many years to develop properly, newcastle on the other hand has its fully developed city centre with all its attractions and facilities, but it still, the same as anywhere else has its many run down un desirable areas away from that city centre.

the difference is I can admit to these things about the city where I live, because its the truth, and when someone else speaks the truth about sunderland, unless they are over the top about it, I can accept what they have to say, because I can open my eyes and see it, you on the other hand obviously cant accept anything said against any of your beloved land.

yes a very fair comment indeed !! Now weighing it up your admitting to living in a shit hole where as we dont and wouldn t Were proud of our city as it is a real city,it has a cathedral which is what really qualifies it as being a city,Also an airport as in Newcastle airport which all the north east travel away on their jollies.Sunderland on the other hand has city status !! its not quite the same really ! you do have an airshow but once again the planes use Newcastle airport to take off and land as theres no airstrip in Pennywell. Were proud of where we live and who we are and dont like derogatory comments aimed at our city as im sure nobody would as a few did comment but to be fair there are shitty parts of Oxford and Newbury which are far worse than anywhere in the north east but thats another story,We even were insulted as people from some bloke in a frock from Scotland..bad accents etc coming from a wee Scottish tranny...lol,though to be honest we just looked at that profile and laughed it off as we see that as laughable anyway

how misinformed are you, the planes do not take off from "newcastle" airport, they take off from teeside, yes we dont have an international airport, but neither do you really as again, "newcastle" international airport isnt actually in the boundarys of newcastle, but like many other things in that area money talks to get a name on it.

Hi Everyone... and thanks for all the suggestions, we did take some of them up and had a FAB time in Newcastle. I just wanted to point out that I've been home a week now so I don't need any more suggestions for now.....

Thanks Cal x

"Was just about to respond to what Sunderland had to offer and apart from the air show, you have just about summed up Sunderlandlike i said...the planes take off and land at Newcastle so its a little queer its Sunderland airshow...

how misinformed are you, the planes do not take off from "newcastle" airport, they take off from teeside, yes we dont have an international airport, but neither do you really as again, "newcastle" international airport isnt actually in the boundarys of newcastle, but like many other things in that area money talks to get a name on it."

The local papers have it all wrong then and it must have been a hallucination watching planes flying over the tyne on the way to Roker,Check the chronical , You really do have a bee in your bonnet about our fair city though it wont stop you drinking partying or shopping here and the extra revenue will only make our city bigger and better

We do realise that but a few of us are just hijacking a dead thread for the banter factor

I never go drinking there, ive been to the arena twice, and the only other times I visit newcastle have been to the football, I do go shopping at a place in gateshead, but thats not newcastle, and any money I spend in any shops will not be going to make newcastle better, its the shops profit.

"What to do in Newcastle?????

Leave as fast as you can and never return. It's a horrible place with horrible inhabitants who speak with an awful accent.

Durham is far nicer and a much prettier city to visit"

what a retarded response.

Durham

The Cluny is a great music venue and Gaz Coombes (Supergrass) is playing there on Tursday 30th. Great album he's just done.

I quite like the Pink Triangle area, especially the Yard. Always friendly people there who'll talk to you if you are on your own.
