This come up in a conversation i had the other day and would like to here your general views.

Do you have to pay for your work uniform or is it supplied free, i was quite amazed when the person i was talking to told me that the small company they worked for made them pay for their uniform, which from what i can make out is just polo shirts and jackets with company name and logo on them.

Is this common practice in companies large and small and for the record i personally do not agree with it at all!

There's a whole section on the HMRC site about how you can claim back tax and other work uniform expenses.....

there is a huuuge difference in which companies charge and dont.

very VERY broadly speaking, companies that require you to wear PPE will foot, or at least part foot the uniform expenses.

I am not sure on the legality of those companies that absolutely require PPE to work in their premises... i've never come up against it. i mean, obv firefighters have PPE, but when i was in an agency that needed steelies, i supplied my own, then when i was taken on perm the boots were supplied as part of the uniform each year.

i have bigger things to worry normally

When I worked a furniture fitter yes we had to buy our uniform, saying that it was top quality gear. The trousers were snickers work tousers, they finally fell apart after 12 years long after I left my job.

My current company no you get it supplied, but if you need extra you have to pay for it. You are allowed a new order of uniform once a year on everything except boots, you do get bits replaced if things get damaged.
