I'm not sure weather to post this on here or in site help.

Anyway, I've noticed over the past few days people appearing on my "do you know these people" list on Facebook that I've met or chatted to via this site. This has now happened 4 times in the past 4 days.

Does anyone have any idea how this is happening?

I don't have their phones numbers on my phone that I access Facebook on and I also don't have their email addresses on the email linked to my Facebook. These people aren't in my area (60+ miles away) and we have no mutual friends.

I know it's not a big thing but it's kind of freaking me out slightly as I keep my swinging life and my real life very separate and this is now showing a significant cross over.

There have been people from here appear on mine but we have mutual friends, never known of people appearing on that list without being connected in some way.

Do you have anyone at all from fab on your facebook? I don't add many, just a handful I trust to behave.

Yes, but not the phone I use for fab and no fab contacts in it, same goes for my iPad.

I'm worried as I have a lot if work connections on my Facebook and whilst I'm not doing anything wrong & not particularly embarrassed by my FAB usage & club attendance, I'd prefer it not to be common knowledge.

First off I'd like to stress that the following is simply my own personal Theory and I have no factual evidence to support it.

FB like all websites will record the IP address of all it's users accessing the site.

These IP addresses are assigned in blocks to ISPs

It may well be that FBs auto linking algorithms are simply displaying other FB users as suggestions if they are coming in from the same IP address block.

Eg if you are on Virgin then they could simply be suggesting other Virgin customers to you

Yes, but not the phone I use for fab and no fab contacts in it, same goes for my iPad.

No one else will k ow it's just your suggested people it doesn't share that with others.

Might be that it's from their end ie they've communicated with you from a device that's liked to their facebook and it's gone "hmm maybe she does know this person".

There's an option to click rhat says I don't know this person anyway isn't there

All accounts for whatsapp etc using an email other than the one registered with face book?

The other option is they've found your profile and had a look theough and face book has recorded this and asked if you know them

I do use the same wifi connection to browse fab & Facebook and I do use the same device (iPad) but fab is a different email address to Facebook.

Whatsapp is diff email, phone numbers and device.

There are no fab contacts on my personal phone or email and I don't use Facebook to look for FAB people as not something I've ever been interested in.

Whilst I know no-one else can see the list, I'm more concerned that I'm coming up on other peoples lists.

Separate phones, I don't have fab friends in the phone I access Facebook on and don't access Facebook on my fab phone.

Twitter I could understand as my fb & twitter accounts are linked. Same goes for linked in, but I've specifically kept FAB separate & ring fenced it, or thought I had.

I'd hazzard a guess that this is possibly the cause. I'm not sure if it's possible on Apple products but you could try installing a Tor browser on your devices and view Fab using that. It should keep things more private.

All about IP addresses and browse history/cookies etc. Nothing to be concerned in regards to Fab encroaching into other parts of your life but you may want to clear your cache yadda yadda yadda

Emails don't mean a thing, it will be using isp information and cookies stored on the device to suggest contacts.

It must be something to do with cookies after visiting sites. I've noticed after I've viewed products on websites, i.e. dresses on Debenhams or flights from airlines, the item comes up on my browsers homepage as an advert for example.

Because those people have accessed the same servers in the past and it leaves a history of their IP address.

Think of it as electronic bread crumbs that Google and social media sites use to try to connect people.

Definately avoid the phone app. Just use a mobile bookmark instead.

The app looks right through your phone list and emails etc looking for contact info.

I used the app only once and found I was suddenly sending friend requests to business contacts who must have thought I was the cable guy or something. Very embarrassing.

Facebook and most other apps are very very invasive- just look at some of the permissions you grant it without reading the terms etc properly.

Google tracks what you look at now and uses that data to build unique webpages. So if you searched for an office chair then office chairs will appear on other pages you browse.

You need an Incognito browser to hide. If using Chrome open an incognito window (select in drop down) or use a private browser .. If you use the phone or iPad default then it captures the data.

If you have external search engines enabled then Facebook can pick that data up and search for an association. If it finds one then it will suggest.

I suspect the others are going the same as you and so Facebook is using the google data and finds matches ...

Its how the internet works and how google finds things you are interested in.

You only have to be friends on FB with one person from here, and that person may be friends with one other person on here, who may be friends with other people on here, and FB will keep mixing you all up as suggestions for people you may know.

Well unless some of my friends are also members here without me knowing (with 400+ it's possible) to the best of my knowledge I don't share any mutual connections between FAB & FB.

Any thanks for all the feedback and suggestions. I'll have to go through all my privacy settings on both again, however both are already pretty locked down, which is just such a faff

Skype contacts have appeared for a friend on facebook - no mutual friends or anything - that was their only link. I don't skype anyone from fab - but that's a possibility if you do

It could be something to do with an email from the site that goes to your email account, if it can link the persons name fb will link it to your your fb account and add it to the people you might know. Facebook scans your emails for people you have messaged or been messaged from.

If that makes sense.

Watched a programme last week where it showed that apps and programmes on most portable devices (laptops/tablets/smart phones) leak information regularly. The information (or parts of the information) that is leaked is then sometimes picked up by other apps or programmes, usually if they are running in the background. These sites are usually social media sites that are geared round the collection of info/data.

So if your friends list on FB is in anyway attached to your contacts list (phone/email) or you have location services turned on on any of your apps then this data can be picked up by other apps/programmes.

I deleted the FB app from my phone after it populated my phone book with people's details from my FB friends list. Details that they didn't share with me and I don't want to know and without my consent. It supposedly can also upload pics from your phone onto your FB photo albums.... fuck that!!!!

There's no privacy anywhere these days. Everything is linked. I avoid putting my real details online unless I really have to.

I am not on Facebook, Facebook is a social relationship database, it's core programming is algorithms to track and detect connections between people. you waive all rights to privacy in the T&C's on signing up to it.

I am only guessing here BUT:-

a possible problem is that HTML (The Web language) tells every page it goes to where it came from, so if you browse a profile e.g. www.fabswingers.com/profile/artificialname, then put Facebook into the address bar and pop over to Facebook, then they can see where you have come from, open the page and see the profile you have just been looking at and possibly work out which cookies relate to that, and extract your Fab username from them. Do this a few times and they start to track and trace activity of Facebook users who are also fab users and the algorithms start to make connections that it can suggest as "people you may know"

For safety on my PC and my phone I use a different browser for Fab to anything else, (Opera was my choice) which means I minimise the risk of telling my church group (not really in one) that I am also browsing Fab.

These are both different email addresses to the ones registered to either our Fab accounts or anything else, but when I joined FB using my real email addy (not my perv one) his account popped up as someone I know and I now know where he went to school, where he works, Ive seen pics of his wife and kids and I probably know as much about him as his Mum does...."
Same thing happened to me, hence I no longer have facebook and the likes of....phones and computers and tablets all want everything linked, I sure as hell don't.

Its simple really.

When you downloaded the app to your phone you gave facebook certain permisions.

you agreed that it could.

Draw over and interrigate other applications.

take pictures and video.

modify your contacts, read your call logs and your contacts and write to your call logs.

retrieve information from other running applications.

use network and gps to locate you and save these locations.

modify access and delete contents of your phone storage.

read your phone status and identity.

read your sync settings.

Read your network connections and your wifi connections.

Find accounts on your device.

So basically you throw open your front door and give them access to have a good look through the information in your lives.

So they take all these little bits of information and they start to compare them to other information that they are collecting from other users and they start to cross match stuff. And when you get enough stuff they start throwing up information to you.

They are doing this as people on the whole have stopped using desktop pc's to access facebook so they dont have that banner down the side to sell advertising anymore. So they now harvest your information to target specific information or "promoted" adds or services to you.

So if you have your facebook app running which probably for most people is 24/7 and you are using the same phone to access other apps or websites facebook is watching. When it finds someone also accessing the same website it looks at the location data sees how close you are together and throws up the old you might know this person.

It uses IP, gps, network settings, internet history, and any other information it can get.

Myself, i dont have the facebook app on my phone. if i want to access it i use the pc and do under certain conditions.

Its a big bad world out there. Be safe...

If one of these people you've met knows your real name they may have looked you up on FB...perhaps just to have a look. FB may register that as a possible person you might know and could suggest them. Then, off the back of that, they might see who they know and start asking if you know them too.

FB is basically guessing and they're using every possible nuance of activity to try and guess correctly...whether that's your activity or anyone elses. That's what I'd say is happening here

It's like living your life under a microscope. That's why I'm not on FB.
