One of my cats gets really scared by thunder and fireworks, have tried a feliway plug in thing and it may have made a slight difference.

Other cat doesn't give a shit, I'm trying to encourage him to be more like her!

have you looked online for any possible holistic solutions..?

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Many years ago our old (now long gone) dog was able to settle in the hallway as it had no windows. Have you got a space like that where your dog might feel safer?

He won't settle anywhere, bolts from room to room, I have a utility place with no windows, he just knocks everything over by climbing.

She was like that when she was younger. We would shut all the doors and one of us would sit with her in the hallway, taking her bed there. As she got older she would take herself there.

Valerian and Skullcap. are a traditional herbal remedy.

You will have to give the plug-in at least 48 hours to start and notice if it will have any effect.

Rescue remedy I would avoid on any animal.

Good luck it is horrid to see any animal being distressed in their home surroundings.

Sheffield

Cage training or a covered dog bed which he can get into and has a roof just above his ears can be good because you are giving him a safe space of his own. Having it only slightly taller than him works because it feels in the right proportions to him so it's comforting.

If you go for cage training cover it with a blanket so it's like his own little cave.

We had a similar issue with fireworks. You can get cd's with storm noises. Play it really quiet so s/he can just hear it. Play it once a day when all is calm, gradually turning it up so s/he can get used to it. Hope it helps.

My friend used to keep a couple of dogs and one of them was petrified of thunder storms and fireworks, she would literally just bolt and once went through the window and escaped, luckily she didn't come to any harm and was reunited with her owners. They used to use rescue remedy and to try and cover the outside noise up by turning the tv/radio up. When it was firework season they had to get some sedation from the vets.

Luckily my cats don't mind thunder or fireworks .

I used to have a Border Collie, who freaked out during thunder and lightening. I remember I was trying to comfort her, I scared her and she went for me.

Worst thing u can do is try to comfort a dog when they are scared/stressed because you are reinforcing their state of mind. I highly recommend you watch The dog whisperer!! That man is amazing!!!

This

And get him a dog cage, introduce it to him carefully by putting in his favorite bedding and toys, something that smells of you etc.

Cover the top and sides so it feels safe but only after he is happy to go in and out of it freely. Do not lock him in to begin with but if he is trained to sit, stay etc ask him to go in lie down and wait with the door open.

The door should only be closed once he is happy and for short periods to begin when you are home, then progress to him being in for an hour while you are out etc building to overnight if you want.

Soon he will be comfortable and feel safe so if thunder threatens you can cover the cage and he will feel safe in it, do remember not to make too much fuss, the more vocal you are the more excitement you create, he is hearing your voice as barking

Good luck
