Anyone know why the armed forces stand at ease during breaks at Wimbledon?

Guess because it's a break

I was there last week and they do a fantastic job of showing everyone to their seats plus getting roped into taking photos for spectators. Very easy on the eye too.

They are there as stewards, tradition is that the armed forces and the London Fire Brigade are there to assist the Honorary stewards in crowd control, seating and in the event of an incident with evacuation..

they cant stand to Attention all day they would keel over..

but if you mean why are they there, its a tradition between the All England tennis club and the MOD dont know exactly why n when it started i think its because Tennis was an elite sport played by toffs n officers sp when you get Officers you need lower ranks to make them feel important

Nope they don't stand to attention during play, prob only when members of the royal family enter the court

No, they are there to steward and part of the role is keeping folks from running on court..

about the only ones who do is on the Royal box when a member of the Royal family enters or leaves..

Standing at ease, or standing to attention, was this them men's or women's final?

I know some of my uniform guys would have been " standing at attention" at either or both

You come to attention, when a commissioned officer or the queen come near you, as you don't salute if you are not wearing headdress, or if said commissioned person or Queen are not wearing headdress.

Traditionally this is because you are actually saluting the crown and the Queens authority not the officer.

Guards salute without headdress.

So if you ain't got a hat with a badge on it and neither do the brass you don't bang one up.

They get well shat on now. They have to use their own personal leave to be a part of it where in the past it was given to them and they were given a budget for food and lodgings.

Probably because they sweat their bollacks off all day. Too stand to attention you need words of command by a Drill Instructor, also it would'nt work so well with it being Tri -Service,different commands Etc. Its not bad for an extra 500 a week extra on top of their wages. Accomodation paid for aswell

They only need the Navy's commands being the senior service. I used to love doing ceremonials with the other services. They always resented having to follow royal naval commands

I did a two week tour of Wimbledon years ago in the 80s when I was a lowly lance corporal. The pure he'll of young American young ladies giving me notes with their hotel room numbers. It was hell

Yup ...last year i earnt £2000 as we had to work extra day . We only have to pay for our own accomodation then rest is hitting the pubs round wimbledon every night haha
