Paternity Leave

Just found out how much you get screwed over for taking it, looks like I'm gunna have to take a few holidays instead to keep my wages topped up, working parents really do get a raw deal

Well people without children don't get it and your taxes may just about cover the cost of education for your children so its pretty much something for nothing!

I have paid taxes since I started work at age 16 and will have to carry on doing until I am 65, a total of 49 years.

I am not sure what a mother is entited to take maternity leave, but, I will get no let off for the fact that I have not taken any maternity leave, does that seem fair too.

It was'nt hat long ago that fathers did'nt get any paternity leave and had to use the annual leave

I think its great that you get anything at all now

I think what Mally is surprised about is the disproportionate loss of earnings whilst you take it, relative to the time you are entitled to take. I know I had to think long and hard before taking it.

A lot of guys won't take it because their partners / spouses are already on mat. leave and unless you have a fair buffer of cash built up, simply can't afford to take it and end up burning up annual leave to do so.

I don't think he's looking for sympathy or a mauling on here. The "man up" and "you have a choice" arguments are overly simplistic and have been trotted out hundreds of times before and are rather old now.

If you're female and have chosen NOT to have children, then that's fine - you're exercising your choice. I am a taxpayer too and I've never grudged my tax £ to that end as I think it's a worthwhile cause.

But hey, that's just my opinion

its the usual attitude to the working family mally !!

the i pay my taxes mentality but not interested when it doesnt concern me! im not gonna live to see old age or get my pension so why should i pay for them?? different when then ball on the other foot!! workin parents get a raw deal your damned if you do and damned if you dont!! messiah dave has said that the system will change for the better for working parents in regard to flexible working etc so fingers crossed it will! xx

Where I work the men get 13 weeks full pay and 13 weeks half pay. We also have a subsidies nursery £750 a month, local nurseries are £1,500 a month.

Working parents do get a raw deal: fact!

Large companies do seem to give better benefits for working families, smaller ones obviously can't afford this type of support.

Unfortunately, and this is a fact proven by the Trade Union USDAW in a report written last year, it has driven employers towards employing people out of child bearing age.

Both B&Q and Asda have admitted that one of the leading reasons for employing more people in their 40's and 50's is because they are out of that 'Parenting' phase.

This is impacting on job opportunities for people in their 20's and 30's.

i asked a male friend about this and he had 2 wks paid leave but in his words ... was glad to get bloody back to work for some peace!!

its sad really because its the time you need the most money but also need to be at home to give support to the family x

My company, a large specialist retailer, allows 10 weeks full pay for paternity, then you can take a further 10 weeks at a wage cut, can't remember what it is offhand though.

The tax argument is a crap one. As a mother, should I choose to become one, I would get 26 weeks full paid leave, and a further 26 weeks additional, at the discretion of my employer. In my employers case, that further 26 weeks is at half pay.

I pay roughly the same tax amount as the possible father of my child, so why should I be entitled to more time off? Usually at a higher wage.

maybe im wrong here and i have no doubt i will be told if i am...but when self employed you would have someone who could take over from you if you needed to be at home for paternity leave? i know you wouldnt get paid for it obviously, but in the true spirit of capitalism you would have ripped your employees off enough so that you could afford to take the time off without worryin financially? abuse to usual address thanks! x

think some will need to be spent on upping educational services!

yes a lot of people have noticed that we seem to be a bit in the red and that it desperately needs to be sorted out its HOW it gets sorted out that is the problem!

nhs? gonna start moanin when you cant get a doctor or seen at a hospital?

local authorities when you cant get the pothole outside your home repaired?

social services when your dementia reaches a stage where you cant be safe in your own home?

tax when your wage drops ?

vat when your food bill goes up?

i really want to see where all these cuts are gonna be and who is going to be affected the most but got a sneaky feeling im goin to be a lot worse off soon! x

Not so long ago fathers took time off and got nowt !

Now you're getting something, that has to be better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, or would you prefer employers to just dole out the money ad hoc and give you as much paid leave as you fancy ?
