When you look back on skills and stuff you used to know but haven't used in years do you find it worrying just how much stuff you've lost. I'm reading stuff in my own bloody handwriting and i cannot believe i once knew what this stuff meant.

Oh goodness yes. A lot of my degree notes are a mystery to me, (well not literally. I still understand them but I no longer remember the subject well).

That said, I've retained a lot also. I still use a lot of the maths I learnt at secondary school. Plus I learn new skills all the time. I retain what I use, and need, I suppose and the rest gets forgotten.

Back in the dim and distant past in one of my jobs in retail I had to add everything up and then only enter the category totals in the till. I used to be able to glance at a column of numbers and add it up almost instantly.

O can still add a column of numbers but it takes both hands, carrying a few and occasionally both feet too!

It is good to help the kids with homework, as you can realise what you still know or have lost somewhat. The most easily lost stuff can be what you have crammed, and it never properly consolidated into long term memory. Otherwise, the location of my keys is a frequent dog to remember.

Recently, whilst cleaning out my late parents' house, I found my old college notes from my journalism studies. Amongst the notes were my tests, projects and final exam gradings. I was pretty impressed with the quality of the work and the comments the lecturer had written and for a brief moment thought "Blimey, can't believe I produced this work"

Definitely. Some of the maths I knew at Uni is just mind boggling. I think my memory is full, as I keep getting flashing messages, so it automatically deletes stuff. Now... What's my name? Why am I standing here staring at the fridge? Where did I put my fucking wallet?

I come across some old books that I used in Sea Cadets, my god my handwriting is awful. It got slightly better in college, by that I mean I never used joined up writing. It is still bloody awful.

A skill I have lost is building bicycle wheels, it would saved me a fortune now.
