Do not use heat to relieve the pain as that will only ease it for a small amount of time and then the pain will gradually get worse.

The best thing is a ice pack on the area that hurts every 3 hours for 10 mins or so and stop doing the exercise that gives you the pain. Only do low impact exercise for 2-3 weeks then gradually add in small amounts of running etc

I suffered for years with them and that's the only thing I found to work.

You need to rest and keep your feet raised. The pain might ease in time. You need to stretch more before running and invest in better supporting running shoes.

Also try anti inflammatory pain killers as shin splints is the tissue over the bone being inflamed.

Titz Towers, North Notts

Try running on a soft surface, rather than the street if that's what you were running on

Go to a proper running shop that has a treadmill and does gait analysis.

They'll video your running motion and style, and advise you on the correct style and fit of shoe for you

In the meantime RICE

Rest

Ice

Compression

Elevation

Try Run and Become or Moti in Cardiff

I don't know of any other in the area

But avoid Sports Direct at all costs unless you know what shoe you need

You can get really good socks that help and you could try running bare foot and on soft surfaces....

Central

Many injuries could be prevented by adequate stretching before and after, as well as warning up and cooling down well. Great clothing helps,as well as pacing yourself on exertion level.

Stretching pre-exercise does nothing. It's not proven to prevent injuries. A slow build up in intensity of your exercise is the best thing to increase the extensibility of your soft tissues.

Have you actually had it diagnosed as shin splints by a health professional? Cos it might not be and you might not be getting the correct advice off the people in this thread.

Ouch!!

Proper running shoes with support, and cushioning.

If you are prone to them there's not a lot you can do... Bar rest in between... I suffered them always for years and just put up with it. I have legs like a footie player too... Yes this is the mrs lol. Rest stretch, hot bath.
