I would like to see Brazil win the tournament. However, would be equally happy if the Germans won, just because of the investment in youth that their FA makes. If only the English FA and EPL would follow suit.

agree with the sentiment that we need to change the system over here in a major way but we seem to have the same old same old every 4 yrs with hollow hints of change from the FA and then nothing seems to come from it..

I don't think Brazil have wowed as people thought they would but I agree about how the FA need to do more when nurturing our country's talent.

I really don't want the Brazilians to win. Their government has thrown billions at this tournament while people are living in tin shacks. They promised infrastructure improvements and private investment only yet neither materialised. I think going out of this tournament would leave them with some very uncomfortable questions to answer.

If we're talking pure football though, Colombia or Holland for me. I've got a soft spot for the Belgians after the last game too.

The UK has been gripped by reccession until recently which we all know and Trev Brooking for the last decade (I think) has been changing grass roots and youth stuff, it might not be the same model as Germany but its not as if anyone has sat back and ignored the situation.

Individually, players have let England down, its my opinion thats why England failed this time.

They had no problems qualifying with almost the same squad of players.

Would another £15m make any difference to Steven Gerrard mistakingly flicking a ball on for a CF to run onto from the opposistion team.

I think you can add to the arguement not enough English/British based players start games or even make the bench.

BBC's gosspi column again today is full of foreign players being talked about in regards to moves to the EPL.

Look at Defoe, could hardly get a kick at Spurs, still good enough for England I think. Not the best example I know

Ben - Im sure I heard the other day Bayern Munich's B team play in a lower tier. Something our league or FA voted 'no' to.

Maybe that is the answer so that if you dont make the 1st team that week you still get competative football infront of fans.

Reserve football is shit, from the little I have seen

We value our homegrown talent so much that it's laughable! As a Manchester United fan, £34 million for Luke Shaw is ridiculous and that is precisely the reason why English clubs look for foreign players, as they are a cut of the price and play for lower wages. Until we stop fannying around, our players will never be playing in other leagues and therefore the English team will never move forward and challenge at International level..

Good point A2.

Bale was over priced to Madrid aswell though, not blaming the players though.

We say this but how many Brazilian or Argentinian players still play at home?

What about the other South American nations

Bale is Welsh though and he won the Champions League in his first season with Real, as long as they are winning silverware, money isn't an issue for them. Infact, Real Madrid vakued him at 80 mil and Spurs played on that in order to get a world record fee.

There are quite a fee players that still play in there homr countries but their players play in several leagues which gives the international teams a dynamic set of players who are not overrated and have been given the chsnce to shine by other clubs.

But hey, football's all about money nowadays!

On the flip side, how many England players play abroad. It seems gone are the days that the Italian and Spanish leagues wanted them.

Last England player who was playing abroad was Hardgreaves at Bayern Munich i think? Then he moved to man utd and hardly got a game (i know was partly down to injury but even if fully fit i don't think he would have been a regular starter in the Man utd first 11.

Shit, I was way off, I thought ENG were ok with x2 games to go.

We all knew before the start ENG wern't expected to qualify, but even as a Welshman its hard not to get excited by our neighbours chances.

It's easy for us to say, Rugby is still our number one sport, but even my team Cardiff are struggling to get any of our home grown through. It was easier when we were in what is League 1, we did sell Ramsey in the Champ but it kept us from going bust.

I dont think when it comes to missing penalties there needs to be a big re-think of how football is progressed.

I do think though a minimum number of home grown players on the pitch might help, what is there to lose?

I think your right and he didnt set Man City on fire either (think he went there).

I dont know what the answer is because thinking about it didnt Spain have like 90% of Barca and Real when they wen't on their winning spree?

Ye know, after watching the 74 & 78 world cups, where the Holland Crueff (that spelling doesn't look right) boys were by far the best, & I like many, was p'd off with the fact they were beaten finalists in both occasions, - the diving antics of Robben have really pissed me off, - & I'd ssssoooooooo love Costa Rica to find their earlier form & kick Dutch ass!!!!

Maybe an obvious dive in the last minutes to win a penalty & make it 4-3 to Costa Rica would be the perfect Karma!!!

.......oh shit, did I just get religious?

Is that true?

If so, I watched the replays of the knee in to the central lower back - & then worryingly, live, I watched the Fifa paramedics 'ROLL' him on to the stretcher!!!

Fuck, - is that really true?

Looks like it http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/28173132

I thought he'd done something serious when you could see the way he was bracing himself as they bumped him off the pitch on the stretcher

After seeing the replays & then the way he was 'loaded' on to the stretcher, I felt sure that it couldn't be a serious injury!! - I've just this second watched it again on the BBC replay, that's incredibly amateur, - surely his spine would be inflatably immobilised before putting him on a stretcher, - not just rolled on to it!!

Maybe there's some Fab paramedics on here - to give their opinion?

They played very good in their first two group games, then when they knew they'd qualified, played pretty poor against England & just about scraped through their last 16 game!

If they can somehow find their early form, yes, anything is possible!!

I so hope that you're correct, dude!!

The referee was shocking in that game. Im surprised more players were not hurt with the things he let them get away with! The way he let the Brazilians kick lumps out of James was just wrong!

"We value our homegrown talent so much that it's laughable! As a Manchester United fan, £34 million for Luke Shaw is ridiculous and that is precisely the reason why English clubs look for foreign players, as they are a cut of the price and play for lower wages. Until we stop fannying around, our players will never be playing in other leagues and therefore the English team will never move forward and challenge at International level.."

What a ridiculous post.

Buying an English player is the reason clubs buy foreign players?

He has fractured a vertebrae, not going to require surgery, just immobilisation. Not a broken back, persay.

Both teams were fouling a lot but the ref definitely went easier on the Brazilians.

How Fernandinho finished that game without even a yellow card is a mystery. And shouldn't the keeper have been sent off, straight forward denial of a goal scoring opportunity?

As mentioned Im glad Brazil won but the ref was shit and helped them a bit. I think the GK/Red card incident was correct though, the guy had moved the ball on and was shoulder to shoulder with Luiz, he would of snuffed it I think.

I just read a good article about how Americans are confused at 'flopping' in professional football. You see some of these guys hit the deck like they have been shot. Its now, sadly, become part of the game. Id love them the bring in a 10 minute 'sin bin' to punish them!

if his career is affected long term there could well be consequences, not sure it is as he was sat in a wheel chair later on but still pretty poor first aid..

this..

needs eradicating from the game, 4th official with access to the camera's could give a decision fairly quickly and tell the ref..

Im a Chelsea fan and used to get fed up with Drogbas antics. He was so fecking strong that he could ride most challenges. That said, I loved it when he wound Barcelona up doing it in the CL.

Man Utd have some floppers I cant stand... Nani and Young don't seem to be able to stand up!

In the WC Mueller and Robben seem to have taken it to a new level

I admire Messi ffornot flopping as he seems to try to get through now matter how many times he is kicked, I cant really recall him going to ground easily.
