off sick yet again

Well the guy I work with does take the piss, he is always going off sick, he worked Monday last week then went sick the rest of the week, he come back yesterday and now has gone of sick again, taking the piss or what ?

It depends what is up with him we had a guy like that and it turned out he had cancer and didn't want everyone in the office to know.

No idea. He could have serious health problems. I was off work for six months once with very serious health issues

don't think there is any real health problems with him, he is only about 35, he will be in one day perfectly ok then the next day he calls in with a chest infection, the fact you seen him looking perfectly ok less than 24hrs ago, doesn't seem to matter,

I see. It can be very frustrating when a colleague takes a lot of time off sick and you can't see a problem. I have spinal stenosis and until I had a titanium implant in my spine suffered from chronic pain and mobility problems, I could be seen out and about walking quite normally one day and the following day unable to walk more than two or three steps. I do know that some people play the system making it difficult for those that have to cover though.

It can be frustrating when you work with someone who is persistently off sick. I used to work with a chap who always kept phoning in sick on nice sunny days. He eventually got dismissed for absenteeism.

Hopefully the chap you work with is just swinging the lead and isn't seriously ill.

Just because he is 35 does not mean he can't have serious health issues...I'm sure his line manager is monitoring his sickness inline with their sickness policy...I would concentrate on your work and allow management to monitor the situation

It can be annoying when it seems like other people are taking the piss, but you just don't know. People suffer all kinds of things and never let on to others.

If your management/HR department is any good then they should be able to tell the difference between genuine and fraudulent absences.

This happened to me a few years back, I was mortified thinking people maybe thinking I was taking the piss, especially as I would have to work with them after I'd recovered.

I think "or what" is the answer

It is between the guy off sick, his doctor and his employer, no one else

If your company is large enough to have its own doctor then the information will be strictly between them. No one else needs to know, its called confidentiality and ideally you would be the last one to be informed as you are already posting his problems on forums.

im sorry but it has got absolutely nothing to do with you and you and your workmates can end up getting yourselves into trouble if you are talking about another persons private business, if they are taking the piss then the appropriate people will be monitoring it now and discussing what action to take.

At the ripe old age of 40 and looking ruddy fabulous I got a major health diagnosis. 18 months later I'm still off work!

At the time I was self employed and there's no sick pay for the self employed so I had to quit. If, however, I had been working for someone else I would have been able to carry on working intermittently. And if I wasn't ready to share my diagnosis I would have only told my line manager and then asked it to be kept confidential till I was ready to talk about it. In that situation I would have had to come up with cover illnesses for time off.

Or he could just be a malingerer...

One other thought: he could be suffering from depression. The depressed are more likely to catch bugs and it takes longer for them to bounce back. He may not even realise it.

Yes it can be annoying but he could have long term health issues.

If you're having to work extra hours or have an unreasonable work load to cover his absence then I would speak to your line manager.

I am the mug who has to carry the extra load and keep getting my shifts altered when he is off, there is f**k all wrong with him, he has admitted in the past that he actually had a day of because his wife nagged him into taking a day of to help her out at home with the kid.

I'm sure he is relieved you are so interested in his health and well being, and have obviously trained as a GP/medic to decide there is nothing wrong with him too.

I've recently returned to work after many years out of work due to chronic and long term illness... did I look unwell, not on the outside.

If the change of shifts is impacting on your life, bring that up with your line manager, not whinging to a bunch of strangers on line.

She might have to do his work as well as her own. I'm assuming that the company have protocols in place for absence and that management are dealing with it. If you're not directly involved or it affects you, not much you can do.

Workers rights have been hard fought for and the power largely rests with employers. People in the uk work some of the longest hours in Europe, and stress is high amongst staff. If people are sick, which employers can predict happens, then staff levels should be high enough to cope. It is important to take sick leave imo, rather than get more burdened with stress by working when sick or spreading infection etc. When more people are paid a living wage or above I will look more favourably at employers, but sickness and rest time is essential for us to use.

At my work place if someone is off sick we all go in early and we have had to do this for the last four weeks on and off. There are only six of us as it is when everyone is there. I'm meant to be on reduced hours because year 11 have left but it's not happening. No point my moaning either as it is what it is. As they said this person could be ill and not look it

I used to work with a guy who would book all his holidays for the year on 1st Jan.

Then as we got into the year he'd ring up and ask to cancel some days in June or August or whatever to have this week off instead.

Come the time he'd originally booked and he'd call in sick. Every bloody time.

I sacked him.

Had a workmate that did similar, then later went long term sick and she finally plucked up the courage to announce she had breast cancer. Maybe he's taking the piss, maybe he isn't.
