Drink driving in rural areas

Now to any do-gooders i'm not condoning drive driving and i have never done it but its something i seen happening on a wee break i was on last week.

Was on holiday in a rural area up in the Highlands which is 50 miles from the main town and to access it you have to get a ferry then its single track roads. There is only one road in and out so its pretty isolated.

The village has a population of less than 200 so everyone knows each other. Most like their drink and they go to the local social club which is the only place they can go to. While i was in i noticed a few came in with their cars. By the end of the night they were well on and drove home. Now its not something i would do but the locals were saying that plod turn a blind eye to it because the nearest Police station is over 40 miles away and the area only has one officer who patrols and he's not going to turn up. He only comes into the village once a week just to say hello and thats it.

A guy was telling me of one regular who constantly drives home pissed and it got to the stage where the locals got concerned of his wellbeing as he was always found in a ditch half jaked. They took the decision to tell plod but as he couldn't prove he was drink driving he warned him and took his car keys from him to prevent any prosecution!

They do know its different in an urban area and as they know no different, living in an isolated area they think its alright.

I just couldn't believe the state of some of them leaving the pub and driving as if its the norm. At least some did put their lights and seat belt on

One guy was telling me he has a bottle of gin in his car.

Once he said he had to slam on the brakes because of an oncoming car. He said he was raging, not because of the other car but because his G&T spilt all over him.

I did laugh at that
