"To slow the ball down (I'm guessing)"

Jesus, a serve already does 150mph. How much faster would it be without the fuzz?

Its because a smooth surface on the ball would slide across the strings, making it difficult to control.

FYI there are companies throwing this into job interviews to see how the candidate thinks.

Its so the ball travels further....similar reason to why a golf ball is dimpled

This sounds like a good question on a Thursday - midday / Lbc 's mystery hour!

I have no idea what the answer is but the presenter will get you an answer!

It's so they know which one to pull out of their pocket.

......& evidently, the women like hairy balls in their knickers!

Incidentally, Barry Davies didn't tell me that!

it's to reduce the aerodynamic drag as they fly through the air

So, errrrrrrrm then smoothness rather than fur increases aerodynamic drag errrrrrm then!

not far from iceland,,,,,, tescos is nearer though :-) (near leeds)

I m in agreement with the guy that said dimples on Golf balls and prof private parts, smooth surfaces create a lot of aerodynamic drag,, rough surfaces break up the air flow reducing drag,, it will give it a far more stable flight as well

Top marks for prof pp and the other guy, the rest of you please see Mrs whiplash in detention,

It's partly down to tradition. Old court tennis balls used a cloth covered cork, hair and wool ball. The cloth covering was important as otherwise the ball was very hard.

Rubber didn't start to be used until late in the 1800's and the balls still tended to be hard and fragile so a soft felt covering was used, plus tennis being a tradition rich sport, never really tried to change the look of equipment much.

And partly down to aerodynamics, the felt covering offers consistent flight characteristics and stops the ball bouncing too high when it hits the ground...

I don't see Lewis Hamilton with a furry exterior on his car? Or big fluffy dice dangling out of the cockpit!!

The fluffy tennis ball is for the strings to get purchase on the ball!

..........but can I still see madam whiplash?

They are designed to increase down force to asist road holding, so high pressure over the top and low pressure underneath. Before the common use of wind tunnels sports cars were death traps, the Lamborghini Miura, for instance, would lift it's front wheels at speedsas low as 80mph causing steering loss.

The animal they slaughter for the balls is small furry and yellow.

It's a tennis rat. This is where the name tennis comes from. Dates back to 3000 bc the pharos used to play with gold rackets.

All true

also a topspin ball will tend to drop faster and a backspin ball will hang in the air for longer

I don't believe it's for control because squash balls go where we want them to. I reckon it's mostly tradition.

They are hairy to slow them in flight, stop them bouncing too high and to enable the strings to put spin on them.

I was under the impression that golf balls had dimples (and ball manufacturers are so protective and territorial of dimple patterns) because they increase the pressure differential between the lower front and upper rear quadrants of the ball to increase lift and to do the same side to side to increase swing thus making the ball more sensitive to pull, fade and backspin.
