Never realised how rude it was!

So, I recently started reading Moby Dick for the first time since I was a teenager. I don't remember sniggering at all when I read it then but this passage just made me snort, "Squeeze! Squeeze! Squeeze! all the morning long; I squeezed that sperm till I myself almost melted into it; I squeezed that sperm till a strange sort of insanity came over me".

My question is - do we get more childish as we get older? And is there anything you thought was innocent as a child that now makes you snigger?

I don't think we become more childish but we certainly understand the sexual innuendos as we get older

When my children were very young I dug out an old Enid Blyton to read to them.

When I got to "Fanny smelled" I had to stop. The kids couldn't understand my laughter.

I recently bought my niece some Famous Five books, and had forgotten the names until she came to me and whispered that there was bad language in the book...bless her! I explained to her they were short for Francesca (I think?) and Richard, and that they didn't mean the same things when the books were written because they were very old. She carried on reading and loves the books, but I've no idea how differently she might have read the stories if she hadn't asked me about Fanny & Dick!!

As for maturity with age OP, I regularly get into trouble for reading filth into the most innocent of things so whilst I may have grown older I don't think I've ever grown up!

It was ok at the time as the kids were clueless.

Now they're at the age where they pass each other knowing looks as though I don't know a euphemism or if a word is naughty or not

Used to snigger in Chapel reading the bible about Gabrielle s bosom. Thankfully this never affected me later on in life where I only slobber over them instead of sniggering.

I read some Chaucer a while ago - was really filthy

My son wanted songs about scuba diving so I went onto youtube, found what looked like an innocent video but after 10 seconds I realised the singer was singing about the other diving. Near broke my neck trying to turn it off.

Laughed a lot about it later....
