Just seen a post on a social networking site asking for donations to give someone a decent send off! It's all set up through funding link thingy!

Not sure how I feel about this!

"No doubt some form of scam"

No it's not, it's a local lad that tragically passed away yesterday, and now this fund me page has been set up

Maybe his family don't have any money for funerals. I think it is a nice gesture by whoever set it up ( assuming of course it is legit )

I've seen fund raising pages for headstones, mainly for babies and children that have passed away. Often see them on Facebook.

It takes some guts to admit not having the money to bury a loved one. There is some goverment help for the poor but it is terribly difficult to obtain and can take weeks. If it was someone local I may give a small amount, depending on the case.

Even a cheap funeral is not that cheap and some families will struggle.

It's the first time I've ever seen this kind of fund raising page, just took me a bit by surprise.

Yes I have donated as the lad was an old school friends son and my daughter went to school with him.

Social media is the new "word of mouth" and reaches a wider audience.

It just used to be neighbourliness and people rallying around each other in times of need.

Though I do see a proliferation in these and tribute sites.

I would have no qualms about making a donation...

Funerals are remarkably expensive these days and you need to budget for them, in advance.

I would however find a way of donating other than on line. But that's me...

Wasn't there a craze before about social funding. People would pit things on that they want to do and random people could donate to it. Things like travelling the world or sky dives etc. I don't think I'd give to that but if I knew someone that was struggling to pay for a funeral I'd probably give to that. It must be an awful thing to know you don't have the money to bury a loved one.

A better thing than grants would be that a basic funeral is free but you can pay for anything extra, losing a loved one is hard enough, worrying about the cost isn't what you need at times like that

Funerals cost a lot & like others have said, it takes a while for a grant to come through.

I always think the saddest cases, are people who have passed away alone & are found in their home. Then no family can be found & the state arrange & fund a funeral which probably has no mourners.

Is the money going into the wake i.e. lot's of booze or into the ceremony?

Do investors get an automatic invite?

Sadly grants can take a long time to come though, and its really hard to access. Lots of families do struggle. From having a sudden death and unexpected funeral in the family recently, and an expect death as well, I know how expensive funerals can be.

Its crowdfunding (funding is a large part of my workload) used for a different outcome. I'd far rather donate to help a family fund a funeral than for some of the other things on there (I've seen crowdfunding for boob jobs)

Were I was brought up if anyone died that there close to where you lived there always used to be a door step collection to send flowers or give them money towards the expense of the funeral....it looks like the only thing that has changed is it is now done on social media.

If you knowethe lad thru your son giving a donation seems a perfectly acceptable way of helping to give him a decent funeral if the family cant afford it.
