Rubbish But Great Music

I buy quite a lot of music, some old and some new.

As I get (just a tiny bit) older, I do have a tendency to get those old albums that I used to have on vinyl.

There are some that I just really love. It is the sound or the spirit behind them.

I have just taken delivery of a Jim Steinman CD, "Bad for Good," for example. I know it is terrible and that he really cannot sing but I adore it. I fall for all sorts of albums that I do recognise are a bit rubbish. Who, for instance, could classify Uriah Heep as a great band?

Does anyone else have favourites that they know are, when it comes down to it, bad? I am not talking about the obvious. Darts and Boney-M appeal to many people despite the being bad.

Now, Shaking Stevens is not a bad example. I hated him. But even I tap my toes and sing along to "Behind the Green Door."

What do you like about them? I can see the rubbish attraction of the Spice Girls. They were universally rubbish and universally catchy.

I think Bad for Good was a fairly decent album..... and I think his vocal performance on it was none to shabby either....

It is not a well known album, is it? It was released after he and Meat parted ways and before they got back together for a brief sojourn.

I was using it as an example. I could have used "Demons and Wizards" as an example instead.

Most of what I listened to when younger, think of as crap now, apart from Joy division.

Classical is the way forward, Einaudi.

Yes, but although very uniquely styled (and I love Islands), I do not think he could be described as crap. Joy Division, on the other hand, might fall into the category of crap but brilliant.

The Shampoo stuff is fun and catchy too and I find some of it quite funny.

'Shiny Black Taxi Cab' always makes me smile.

"I had those girls in me cab the other week. Sick all over the place. I 'ad to charge 'em double. They should bring back National Service. Bring back 'anging. 'anging? 'anging's too good for 'em! Now I'm not racist or nuffin' but some of them mini cab drivers. They've got no license, no insurance. Some of 'em ain't even got a bleedin' car!..."

I seem to remember the rumour-mill at that time said something like Jim decided to record the album himself because Meatloaf was having vocal problems of his own which left him unavailable for the recording..

Ok before I ruin whatever is left of my online reputation lol I just want to say I pride myself on having good taste in music But, as I make my own music, I do have tremendous respect for musicians and producers who are exceptional song-smiths, regardless of the shit they've applied their talents to lol. So here's my list of shame...

Abba (You just can't fault their ability to put together a song)

Barry Manilow (Another exceptional song writer some of the time...a mind bogglingly awful one most of the time lol)

The Carpenters (Truly exceptional production and amazing singing)

Julio Iglesias (Ok this is where I get my trousers pulled down and laughed at ...but the production quality honestly is inspiring)

Now that was the point of my thread. I wholeheartedly agree with you.

I hate Barry Manilow but his songwriting talent is immense.

How could you not sing along to Abba's "Fernando" or "Super Trouper?"

And, you see, I just had to download "Me and You and a Dog Named Boo." Sad, I know.
