When does being a sex addict become a problem?

I recently read an article describing the increase of people being clinically diagnosed with sex addiction. They described the the varying outcomes of the condition being akin to an alcoholic or a drug addict ie people losing jobs, financial burden and abandoning family. When I read the symptoms for the condition I was almost certainly self diagnosed as being an addict! Do that made me wonder when does the addiction for lust become a problem and has anyone any experience of such difficulties?

When you steal money from your work to pay for hotel rooms. When you can't concentrate on your work because you're thinking about sex. When you are out with friends and looking for someone to have sex with instead of enjoying their company

I think that it becomes a problem when it interferes with normal life. If you start cancelling arrangements, not going out, skipping work. It's then when it starts to become a problem. It's then when you have to start to reign it in a little.

We all like it, that's why we are here but we all have or should have normal lives too.

When it stops you living a full enjoyable life, puts you at risk, costs you your job, puts your relationships with partners on the rocks, causes family problems.

People used to think having a sexual addiction was one of the best addictions ever but it's linked to your mental health and is seriously scary and can destroy your life, sex means everything but intimacy means nothing can be as bad as a hero on addict people have seriously harmed there own genitals due to overdoing wanking etc

Sex, like anything else that is addictive - heroin, gambling, etc - triggers the reward centre of the brain and makes us feel good. Like any addiction, you build up a tolerance, so you need more stimulation - a bigger hit - to trigger the same feelings. After a while, the hit is more important than anything else - friends, family, work, your own health - and everything else falls apart... The first step in dealing with an addiction is to realise you have a problem. Good luck.

When you can't stop checking fab every five minutes in the hope someone's mailed you.

When you get banned from Tesco for rubbing yourself up against women bending over the freezers.

When you think lovely woman is checking you out thinking 'hell yeah - I'd do him" - sorry, no - that should be filed under delusional

Some good comments.

I think it is like any addiction - when it interferes with your day to day life.

I have had alcoholics in my family and as a result ended up viewing someone as an addict when it interferes with their personal life. My view is you could drink regularly but as long as can go to work, do your job, carry on as normal you are fine. Its when it starts to interfere.

I think many people on this site potentially have an addiction, including myself. Whilst I've not missed work I have been heavily distracted, going out at lunch to meet strangers for sex despite the lack of attraction or common interest. Some weekends I've preferred to stay into look at porn which had led to meets and undertaking activities I wouldn't do if not aroused, some of which I later find shameful. Its a difficult place to be and doesn't help your mental state at all

Having said that dealing with the issue is not easy. None of my friends or family know and I really don't want them too.

Central

Any variation from the norm is only a problem for someone if they want something different but cant change, or they realise that it is creating serious problems for them. There are always outliers in populations, so some folk will have massive sexual involvement. Im a bit more relaxed, and like balance in life.

like any addiction, it becomes a problem when it stops you functioning in a 'normal' way and having a 'normal' life.

however, its very easy for someone to say they are 'addicted' to something, when they actually just enjoy it.

Very true, so I suppose that in summary an addiction can be healthy or unhealthy for your state if mind and the barometer appears to be whether or not it affects other aspects of your live in a negative manner!

no, no addiction is good, because by its simple meaning, you cannot control your desire for it.

hence i said there is a difference between being an addict, for something, and merely enjoying doing something.

its a small leap, however, to go from one, to the next.

Self diagnosing isn't a good thing either - it could start to become a habit or a form of self abuse...arff arff
