notts

just been to a well known high street shoe repair/key cutters.

wanted a new mortice key cut, took all of 20 seconds, was handed the key and told "that will be £7.00 please"

upon questioning the (in my opinion) high price, i was told that i could have a second key cut for just £3.00 as long it was the same key and not a different profile. then the guy proudly announced "that makes the second key less than half price"

no it feckin dont mate, it makes the one key that i want more than double the price

I had to get a set of 3 keys cut a few years ago. They were just standard Yale, mortice and Euro lock keys. It took a couple of minutes and cost over £20!

Daylight bloomin' robbery.

Thankfully I know a guy in the chain of key cutters place, through my work and I always get a wee discount. Got 4 keys cut, 2 yales and 2 mortice for £10.

Same shop. I took a watch to be repaired when the battery had leaked inside. Was quoted £45-50 at one branch, as it had to be sent off and the mechanics had to be replaced. Took it to another branch of the same chain who put £30 on the ticket. A couple months later it came back and was only charged the £30!

Same company wanted to charge me £12 for a watch battery because it was a special tool they needed to use to take the back off, asked him if he had the tool and he said yes so why the fook should it cost me £12.

Went to a watch repairer on the market £2 not much difference is there

Love this

OR

save all the money and try cutting it yourself

Youd need to get the cutting machine etc but you could do it at home and save on business rent+rates etc..

joke

I thought, perhaps wrongly, that mortice keys had a number on them and that if you needed a copy, they just sold you one with that number on it 'off the shelf' so to speak.

Bristol

Every operative and store in that well known chain is totally autonomous and can set their own prices based on a guideline. They have a fantastic structure whereby the employee can set how much they charge arbitrarily.

That means if a kid wants something for their dad's birthday but is a bit short, the price can be changed to help them. However us grownups sometimes have to foot the bill.

Maybe it is worth haggling?

Replacement Key for a well know french car company after the other one had stopped working £165.00.

Managed to find somewhere a little corner shop in London that did the same job for £65.00 blood robbing garages.

When

You consider the prices of how things have gone up in the last ten years like food

You have just mentioned I can,t be positive on this but I,d say its gone

Up realistically speaking more than

Any decade before in the last 40 or

More years and thats frightening and

If you went 20/30 years before that or

More I bet the prices hardly changed

for years thou obviously during some

Of those times times were very bad but

generally speaking nothing comes down

In price and don,t we know it.

Central

Strange, we used to live in times of massive inflation, but now we are told prices are flatlined. Not where I live. Nobody probably includes key cutting costs for example in inflation calculations. And dont get me started on the 'competition' that has worked so well for us in gas, electricity, trains etc. For wages it has been a race to the bottom, unlike the cost of living which raced in the opposite direction.

Renault once wanted £185 for a new EGR valve plus two hours labour at £90ph on my exes old Megane.

I unscrewed the three bolts myself, sprayed the valve with a few squirts of carb cleaner, did the bolts back up and the fault was fixed. It all took less than 45 mins.

Saved myself £360...
