Don't laugh - this is serious! I planted out some sweet peas this morning - very small and no flowers as too young but since then the bees have been going mad around them! At one point there were 10 similar looking bees going crazy on the soil next to them. Can anyone explain why? Z

They can't smell of much as they're only about 2" tall and just green with tiny leaves - it was really weird to watch the bees though they seemed to be loving it! Z

I think the bees did recognise the plants Z. .........

Ta for the topic i read a little and learned a few things..... Don't have time to read much more but will do cos I love learning

1. Bees have different length tongues according to their species. So ..some bees can feed from sweetpea and some can't.

2. Bees need a variety of flowers and especially wild ones like sweet pea. Apparently cultivated plants can lack sufficient pollen and nectar etc.

3. Sweet peas attract bees a lot so gardners plant them between their bean or pea plants cos sweetpeas really bring the bees in and the bees do the other plants as well.

4. Sweet peas ARE highly scented

end of today's lesson xx Gran xx

near the sounds of the wimborne quarter jack!

There`s either something on the plants that`s attracting them such as a germination "encourager" something I`d expect to find on commercially raised plants, or possibly something in the potting compost particularly if recycled green waste is in the consist of the compost. Bees would be attracted to the rotted wood in the compost.

I had a colony living under my shed, they were in and out all day and when I looked for a nest there was nothing, it was a local bee society who gave me information about them being IN the soil! xx

Honey is a sore point in our house at the moment...

I brought a very expensive jar of Manuka honey (it's very good to take if you suffer from aching joints)...

My son had a BBQ party and used the Manuka honey in a bloody marinade, mixed with tomato ketchup and other stuff.

Grrrrrrrrrrr!
