A person who we know (single mother) is allowing a 25 year old male to stay with her daughter, to us this seems bad! Just wanted to know if this is legal?

Yes, she's over 16 and of legal age unless she lacks the capacity to make a decision herself.

In the US it depends on what state you live. The age of consent ranges from 16 to 18. Is it right? I think it comes down to the individuals involved. Is she mature and responsible? Is he taking advantage? It's hard for me to pass judgment on a couple I don't know personally.

One of my best mates married his Mrs in the late 60's when she was 18 and he 26.. They stayed married until 2000 ... Then she found someone her own age (49) .... Girls mature earlier than boys so find older more attractive. If she was 37 and he 45 would it be of such concern ?

Doesn't matter if the boyfriend is 60, as long as she is over 16 age gaps are very individual so can't be judged from outside the relationship.

The eight years as a proportion of life lived is where the concern comes in. It means nothing about maturity and how people feel though.

You are not clear on what you mean by 'stay' so i'll assume you mean he visits their house and stays until the next morning.

You are not clear whether the male and the daughter are in a sexual relationship but for the sake of this thread i'll assume they are or that it is sex that you are concerned about.

You ask if it is legal.

Yes.

Thanks for the response guys, I do know the age of consent is 16 but I'm sure certain laws were changed recently so this has been cleared up, our only concern really is that she ain't been taken advantage of, the guy seems to be into his "" and alcohol and seems to be encouraging her in this. And the only reason I mentioned that the mother was a single parent was that she spends a lot of time away with her partner and don't really seem bothered.

At 17 she is over the legal age of consent so it's legal. Unless she is registered with a mental health issue in which case it would be for her parents to protect her.

I can see why the mother would allow it as preferable to her daughter just going to a park or somewhere plus they can assure that contraceptives are available.

Personally I'd be more concerned why a 25 year old wants a young teenage child for a girlfriend as she is still classed as a minor. Xx

If she's not really bothered it may be because she knows the two of them really well, and that there is nothing to worry about.

In ages gone by she would have been married and had a few kids by now! And is more of a relaxing influence, and people will get and experiment with it, regardless of whether dating.

My daughter is almost fifteen but she is very tall and looks about 18. She is pretty mature and doesn't really have an interest in boys her own age, or boys older than her. When she is ready to date, I think she may go for someone older than herself, but if he hurts her, her dad will do for him and bury him in the garden!

That's your personal choice. Your moral standpoint isn't the only one or the "one true way".

There may well be things you do that he wouldn't. We're all different. It makes life interesting.

You're happy, as has been pointed out, to fuck women 11 years younger than you. He's happy to date, (we don't know they are having sex), someone 8 years younger than him. They're both happy, it seems.

You aren't the young woman's parent. You aren't either of the people involved. It's not illegal in any way. I'd say you should probably mind your own business, to be frank.

The question you ask is at legal for a 17 year old girl to go out with a 27 year old man, there are no laws governing how old you have to be to go out with any one. It is illegal to have sex with anyone under the age of 16.

"Even if they are having sex its still not illegal UNLESS he a Duty of care ie teacher or carer etc then its totaly legal "

TBH as it's not the OP's child and initially the post gave a half story I doubt any reply would give the answer as we only have a " friend of a friend " type thing, we don't know the full story - we don't know if an educator or care taker is involved...if the post had said either were then I would have replied otherwise, so I appreciate your stessing the of duty of care.

"Well you are 36 and happy to meet people from 25 which is 11 years younger than you. A

Just saying.

But I wouldn't meet a 16/17 year old!

But you're not a 25 year old

Even if I was 25 I wouldn't date a 16/17 year old. I would feel ashamed personally.

Bit harsh as the OP was asking ( for enlightenment ) if it was legal not if she was being a nosy busybody. "

To begin with, yes but they've since said they know the age of consent is 16.

And since then it's moved on to "I don't agree with...", "I wouldn't. .." and "I would...". The original question had been answered by then so that was obviously taking the thread in a new and judgemental direction.

Yes I agree.

my apology, a lot of replies took a long time to load on my browser and I missed them before replying to you, yes it has become very judgemental I agree as we haven't had the full story - unless I missed an update from OP, I keep scrolling to find out if it was a sexual "thing" btw why does Windows keep using American blooming spelling for judgemental? grr lol

I don't think you should be concerned. Maybe he's just staying over to keep her company.

I was 15 when I met my ex and he was 26 .. We married, had 4 kids and were together for 26 years.

No problem.

The OP has been very vague on a number of points. I don't think they know if it's a sexual relationship, and why would they? It's a personal thing between the two people involved. And the comments about adults in positions of responsibility seem totally irrelevant, based on everything said so far.

My 'phone defaults to all sorts of random spellings and words. The joys of auto-correct

If i was 25, I wouldn't personally be wanting to date someone who I couldn't even go to the pub with.

But it's not illegal and if they're all cool about it, then there's nothing anyone can do or say.

Age is just a number and in a couple of years the age gap won't even seem like a big deal it's just because she's 17 now.

When I was 17 I would have loved to go out with someone of 25, but when I was 25 a 17 year old seemed like a child. I don't think any legal and consensual relationship is wrong though whatever the ages it's when coercion and abuse come into play that I have problems.

"FFS only asked a simple question and got my answer! Personally I wouldn't allow it under my roof. But I guess it all comes down to what kind of parent you are! I don't think most decent fathers would agree with it. But each to there own."

Never see the point in this kind of statement. Surely nobody on here can in any way judge what kind of father the person is in question, or the daughter, or her partner.

It just leads to lots of ignorant twaddle based on actually nothing. And why end it with 'each to their own' when that's clearly not what you believe? At least have the substance to stand by your opinion.

I am extremely close to a couple who got together when she was 17 and he was 28 and married. He divorced his wife and married her.

If they were stopped from being together, I wouldn't be here now and my mum and dad are still together 30 years later.

As long as both halves are above the age of consent and there is no abuse of position or power taking place, it's nobody's business but theirs.

young women, females or girls are by and large more mature than lads, boys, young men of the same age..

for most 17 yr old young women their opposite 17 yr old male is a giggling child when they want to be 'grown up' and treated like women..

Completely legal. She is old enough for consensual sex, and marriage, under British law.

I have a young daughter, when she is 17 I do not want her going out with a lad who just wants her for sex, unfortunately that means she would be better off with an older man. I know what 17 year old boys are like, i used to be one myself.

No what i am saying is that when my daughter is 17, or 18 for that matter, she is more likely to find a man who will treat her right if she is with an older man. Trust me on this one ok. I know what 17/18 year olds are like i was that age myself once.

What is most shocking is that some don't know what the age of consent is in the UK.

Exactly!! Age and maturity are so misaligned between the genders.

A young woman reaches full maturity, in terms of brain development, between 21 and 22 years of age. A young man does not reach full maturity, in terms of brain development, until nearly 30 years of age. So a 17 year old female and a 25 year old male are probably around the same maturity levels!!

As long as he's treating her right it's no ones business than there's and it's completely legal

I never suggested it was. I would have thought however that you might have the same respect for your daughter to make a judgement about her choice of future sexual partners and activities in the same way you are happy for girls of 18 to with you (or not).

Again the question was about a weather it is right for a 17 year old girl to go out with a 25 year old man, it was not about casual sex.
