Anyone got any good tips for getting a pill down the throat of a dog, lol

Our Chow Chow needs to take his tablets but he just wont have it.

Tried wrapping it in ham, cheese.

Tried shoving it down his throat but he just spits it back up....lol

Any ideas?

Susan

Put to the back of his tongue hold his head up and mouth closed then gently rub his throat this encourages them to swallow.

We got ours to take his antibiotics by breaking them up and putting them on toasted jam sandwiches

He does love a toast tho

just to stay they shouldn't have anything to do with any kind of grape. It causes renal failure

Hi. You can purchase an animal pill pusher, we use one for our cats. If you google pill pusher for dogs there are plenty for sale about £2.

maybe try peanut butter - it's sticky enough and lickable enough that it should get swallowed. Put a finger-full onto the roof of it's mouth and give it a good press in to it sticks well to the roof

in the night garden

Get that meat paste stuff, like sandwich spread. Small clump, hide tablet inside. Works every time 75% of the time.

What's grapes go to do with jam ?

He doesn't like wine either, so should be OK ?

Do this with mine, also helps to tell him good boy while doing it and give him a treat after

I used to have a few of his treats and the tablet, get him to sit and throw the treats 1 by 1 so he would catch them, eating them immediately, sneaking the tablet in before a few more treats.

I misinterpreted this thread - thought it was something to encourage sexual positions.

Apologies

jams are usually strawberry - which is bad, or plumb .. again not good for them - could literally kill in days if they have reaction to the enzymes

Butter on a dog biscuit and slip the tablet in works on ours.

Or try a pea shooter and fire it down the back of his throat

Keep him away from food for as long as it takes him to be really hungry. We have found they are more ready to swallow anything with their food then. Also, chocolate is terrible for dogs - you can get similar treats but dont give them our stuff - send it to me, if spare Also keep your behaviour as close to normal feeding actions as possible, so that they are like pavlovs dogs and salivate ready for it.

Definitely crush the tablet - I prefer to do it onto a saucer using the back of a spoon, but whichever way, the powder is absorbed onto the animal's tongue more easily. Mix the powder with something strong tasting - marmite, primula cheese etc.

We cover ours in butter, then one of us holds it's mouth open and the other one shoots it in, sounds cruel but it's the only way we can do it with our cats, and we figure they still seem to love us so can't find it that bad lol

Crushed and in a spoon of my breakfast yogurt... whatever i eat they want, worked really well.

Sister gives her dog cod liver oil tablets everyday as part of his morning routine... got him used to tablets. Just as well really as he is on tablets for life now

Agree re our behaviour, they pick up on your nervousness and won't take it x
