Work Experience

Do schools still do work experience and write CVs. Have had a thought with people trying to do something about the young unemployed and means testing benefits.

Once they have finished GCSE'S before they get their results in August they should have to do a months work experience in the school holidays. Ie work experience or even internships. The Government is hell bent on education but what about work experience. They all have to stay on at school until they are 18. With the work experience they will get experience plus reference for their CVs. Even interview practice for when they get out into the real world x

My daughter never did work experience and she has finished her exams. She is working in British Heart Foundation and loving it also due to do NCS over the hols before she starts college. Was wondering whether it would be a good idea to extend work experience during the school hols could cover the main ones summer, Christmas and Easter x

Both my kids did it but it was eight years ago. The experience was invaluable both of them enjoyed it immensely and it made my son realise that full time education wasn't for him. I agree that it's a great idea and hope it's still done.

Yep our kids did work experience, had workshops on how to write a good CV. They also took part in a scheme called The Big Interview where big companies went in to school and did mock interviews with the kids. Our 15yr old looked very dapper in a suit!!

It's the same as you'd expect really - some schools / local authorities are great at getting links set up with local employers etc and are proactive.

Others are less inclined but I'm sure if parents asked schools they would get some results. Or just asked / sought companies out themselves etc. Plenty out there usually

Both mine were very lucky with the companies they worked for particularly my son. He was included in social activities and made to feel very much part of the regular work force, I think it's fair to say that it helped him decide his future in some ways. I have gearshift kids being treated as no more than nuisances though.

All the schools that I know of, in our borough do.

They also have take your son/daughter to work days before they choose their options.
