Dog attack

I have had an extremely scarey evening

My daughter and I took my Lhasa for a walk earlier to then get attacked by a massive staffy not on a lead it went straight for My dog then My daughter then another dog and a toddler . Police came fast and the dog was back at it's home . Had to go emergency vet and luckily My dog is better than I feared . Injection anti biotics and got to go back but we all safe and luckily My daughter and I not injured just in shock . Such a scarey experience but the police and vets were great and the owner said he will pay the £180 vets bill next week ... We won't hold breath . What a horrendous evening

Dogs, regardless of breed, should be on a lead in a public. End of.

Keep your eye on her.

Ours was attacked the other week.

Took him to the vets and had him checked.

Then needed another 3 trips to the vets as he became infected and his face / head swelled up to twice it's normal size within the space of about 5 hours.

Quite scary. Thankfully now he just has a couple of marks but he has become quite withdrawn in himself since.

The owners should also be prosecuted for allowing their dog not to be under control.

I wish there was a way to compulsory muzzle dogs that have proven to be out of control

I do hope that you and your daughter are ok and not too traumatised

Police called me they were still at the house still so I don't know

The man says he takes full responsibility I don't know what to do really I was petrified thought it was going to kill my dog and hurt my child

I am so shaken up

My mums dog got bitten this week by a large, unleashed dog. as much as i hate the annoying little thing i was ready to have that dog....luckily a lot of noise was all it took to get rid of the dog. This dog was left, unrestrained in an open landrover, no owners to be seen anywhere and none made themselves known after the commotion and i was not quiet when chasing the dog off!

Irresponsible dog owners piss me off!!

Disagree that all dogs should be on leads at all times in public i walk my dog off lead a lot if i see folk aporoaching with or without a dig he sits and does not move at all.

As everyone knows its the owners at fault most dogs are if trained well are sociable with others.

What i firmly believe is in these instances the dogs should be removed from the owner and the owners barred from kerping dogs at least two yesrs.

I fear no dog respect them but never fesr thats where owners fall down.

Really hope you all recover from the trauma.

I am no dog exoert or trainer but any dog can be controlled.

Other week a rotty went straight at my dog i spotted change in its body language and stooped it before it escalated.

The owner eventually ambled up and apologised i was not polite.

He gave the same old shit peddled by owners of big dogs in particular that the dog is too strong. The bloke after a chat let me have his dog for an hour in that hour i was in charge by time i finished it walked good on lead then had to show the owner how to do it it was harder thsn sorting the dog.

Anyone with any dog issues should watch cesar milan to the rescue its easy to do but patience is required.

I saw the dog coming so usually I just pull mine in and the dogs say hello to each other but I see it not on a lead so went to pick mine up but was just not fast enough my daughter had the lead she was screaming it was absolutely awful

I got to wait until weds to get the money he needs to pay me but I honestly feel he needs to loose that dog he can't control it

I may ring the police tomorrow see what they say as last thing they said was they was still with the owner who will pay vets bill in full .

My poor dog she is in a bad way thank god she is alive and home and me and my daughter are ok

He could control it.

Or temper its behaviour.

If it was on a lead.

All dogs can turn.

Most owners are not experts or handlers.

They are generally family folk who want a pet.

How many people take their pet to obedience training.

I dare say very few.

It's always their dog that woukd never attack - til it does !

People often make the mistake that because their dog is friendly, so us every other dog.

Not the case.

That's when the fun starts.

Get them on leads.

Our son was also attacked by a dog. If you get asked if you want the attacking dog to be put down I wouldn't say "No its ok" until you have had time to think about it. We said "No its ok" but I still think about it and now, years later, and think the dog should have been put down. The dog still lives and is a grumpy, growly nasty thing.

The police probably wont do much.

My neighbours dog was wandering on my property last year and it took a chunk out of my arm and butt. Unless I prosecuted the police wouldn't do anything except caution.

Don,t talk rubbish i have have 2 VERY well trained German Sheperds that NEVER go on a lead its not the dog its the owner. All dog owners should be made to take their dog to training school if they don,t know how to train a dog themselfs.

Am so glad there was no lasting serious injury.

I have had 3 generations of Border Collies and never used a lead on any of them. As another poster has pointed out, it's more about who is in control and how you train your dog to react to certain situations.

so sorry to hear that you went through this, but that you are all ok, if a bit shook up.

I was bitten by a friends dog, he just went for me as I walked through the door, took a chunk out of my hand.

Police wouldn't do a thing as it was on their property.

Hope you get the vet fees settled and some sort of action is taken against the dog owner.

Thanks found out that since April 1st it's illegal to walk your dog on a lead

A dog is deemed dangerous if:

Attacks and harms a dog

Attacks and harms a human

Makes a human fear they will be harmed by a dog

So I am reporting today as I know it's the man whom is responsible for the dog and clearly the dog has not been trained correctly as it would not listen to him at all

I love my staffy and he is well trained I do keep him on the lead at all times when other dogs approach he always lays down and waits for them to come to him he never makes the first move and he is a soppy thing. Staffies are beautiful and it is not the dog but the owners and Staffies always get a bad rap and it is not fair on the breed.

I am glad you and your family including your dog are ok. I would contact the police plus the local dog warden as well.

Sorry to hear what happened. The dog owner needs to be brought to account. How irresponsible of him to have his dog off the lead in a public place. At the end of the day, no matter how well a dog is trained, it is still an animal and can be distracted. Dogs should be on a lead in public places, i.e. by roads, not just for the public's safety, but for the dog's too.

I would definately look at taking it further as not only did it go for the dogs, it went for 2 children.

I have only had one experience of a dog attack when I used to be a dog-sitter. An unleashed Staffy came pelting down the road and went straight for ME while out walking a dog that we regularly looked after. It got hold of my arm but the dog I was walking (a Cane Corso) went for it and it let go and ran off.

Later came across the chavy owner who barely mumbled an apology and tried to walk away.

I phoned the police and later found out that the dog has attacked multiple times and had been seized.

If you can prevent this happening to anyone else, it's worth it.

I agree with that. Our incident was with a neighbour's dog so I didn't want to cause ill feeling. But the dog had attacked other dogs before and was aggressive with children. No-one else dared to report them but I was worried what might happen next time.

The dog that attacked was probably owned by a person that said exactly the same thing as posters on here that think its ok to have their dogs off leads in public places, I hate that mentality

All dogs can attack for various reasons even the very best behaved ones can

Now the dog in question is at risk due to the owners negligence is keeping his dog in control, poor dog but what a terrible stupid owner.

keep in touch with the police op and if it goes to court you will be covered if owner doesn't stump up now give him a copy of the bill

Hope he is decent and does pay it swiftly

Irresponsible dog owners anger me. People shouldn't have dogs if they can't control them. In an ideal world anyone owning a dog should attend obedience classes and take steps to socialise their dogs with other dogs and children / people. Sadly its only the responsible owners who do take the time to so this.

I dont like staffies or similar, these breeds seem to be part of the chav uniform. If I see one in the fields when I'm out with my dog then I always put her on the lead.

I know that all dogs can turn, and I've met a few nasty chihauhas in my time, but many dog attacks are caused by this kind of breed and under certain inexperienced and bad owners these dogs aren't good around other dogs. Their are many staffies in rescue centres and bad breeding can cause problems.

OP I would keep pressing the police on what's happening etc. The owner should rightly pay your vet bill. Best wishes to you and hopefully your dog and child will be calmer soon

my dogs tiny but she barks at other dogs when they are on a lead even big dogs, a man was walking his alsation dog over the forest it came running up to my dog and so i went to pick her up, and he said dont pick her up but i did anyway, then he said i shoudnt of picked

her up because his dog might bite my arm i would rather the dog bite me than my little dog.

my husband always said i worry too much,

stupidly i took notice of him and one day a shetland pony went up to my dog and i ignored it then it stamped on my dogs back, luckily she was ok, just had a sore back for a while.

hear about dogs getting attacked by other dogs all the time, see it yesterday on mail online a woman and her kids little poodle was attacked and the vet stitched it up but it wouldnt heal up and her kids were upset because they couldnt afford to keep paying the vet bills and said they might have to have it put down.

Glad you are all ok and you receive payment for this attack.

I walk my dogs on a daily basis,always on a lead, within days you will soon recognise the problem cases, on or off a lead.

I find its the small breed owners that don't train or lead their pet/s, they believe that as its only small it can't cause any serious issues, until a large dog bites it, its an issue then!

The times I've had little dogs hanging from my mutts faces, I've lost count. I now avoid all dog walkers I don't recognise.

I'm glad to hear your daughter and dog are both ok after such a traumatic experience.

I don't agree with having to keep ALL dogs on leads in ALL public areas. My sweet little pooch loves to run like the wind when we're at our favourite walking spot on the coast (a remote spot popular with dog walkers, away from general beach-goers) I'd hate to have to keep him leashed all the time - when are dogs supposed to have a bloody good romp if they're on the end of a lead all the time?

I was bitten by an unleashed westie when I was young, still got the scar on my hand. Hasn't put me off dogs but I am always wary of any that I walk by in the street

with any breed it is the owner to blame in nearly all dog attacks,some just get certain breeds for the image,if they actually knew about how most staffys are they wouldn't want them,there are only 2 dogs listed by the kennel club as being "very good with children" a staffy and one of the spaniels,staffys used to be known as nanny dogs because of how they are (usually) with kids!

hope they get barred from keeping dogs,seems like they don't want to be responsible for it or what it does,confirms my earlier post really,if their dog is insured the policy would cover them for this

I have a 20 month old Rottie who is walked off lead in the park but is put on his lead as soon as I see families and people with dogs until they are introduced. Sometimes we come across families and others suddenly, but he just sniffs, wags his tail furiously and trots off. His best doggy friend is a Staffy bitch and they charge about chasing each other, playing, her growling and hanging off his collar, until recently when he flipped her! However because of the change in legislation, I am very cautious where ever we are because I could be prosecuted for him just running up to someone whether it's outside or in my home or property. On a side note, he's been attacked twice by Jack Russells who were off lead. He was on his lead. As to training, I beg people not to use Cesar Milan's methods!!!!!
